I had my Japanese model NUS-001 N64 modded last year with an RGB mod. However I only got around to using it last week. I assumed that everything was OK with the unit however upon plugging it in I get no picture despite using a number of different cables be it N64 RGB scart (ntsc) , Official PAL GameCube Scart lead and a standard Nintendo composite lead from a Super Famicom. The system powers up as the indicator light comes on. Just no picture either went it's directly plugged into a CRT or into a framemeister. As it's a Japanese system I'm using a step down transformer. Which states it's as follows: 100 watt electricity converter Input 220/240v AC Output 110/120 AC 50/69Hz I have no reason to distrust the modder but I can't see how the system would have become damaged between the time I got it back from the modder and me starting to use it as has simply been in storage in a box. The only think I can think of is that the PSU may be faulty or the step down converter may be of the wrong type. I use it with my PC Engine Duo R with no issue. Finally the my PSU is the original Japanese Nintendo one that came with the console. Has anyone else had an issue of power but no picture? I'm due to send the system back to the modder to have a look at it but it is now out of warranty so they are going to charge and inspection fee. However before I do that I just wanted to see if there is anything I can do, I was thinking of buying a PAL PSU! Thanks in advance for any help
Go for the pal PSU first then you can rule out the potential faulty power supply. Its likely to be the cheapest option and a good starting point.
Since just a few days ago someone else asked sth similar, let's get the obvious out of the way: Do you have a (known working) game inserted? Without one, the power LED comes on but the console won't have anything to boot -> black screen. If that's not it, trying a PSU from your region would be a good idea, yes. And finally, as an aside - with all those N64 RGB mods being as different as they are, any modder worth his salt really should've given you a working cable with the console... Or at the very least should be able to tell you what you need.
Hey Guys, Yeah I've got plenty of software so I don't think that's the issue as I cant imagine that my software is the issue. The mod that carried used a THS7314 AMP and the cables I've tried include a number of RGB cables Gamecube PAL, N64 NTSC and SFC NTSC. I've even tried a composite cable all of which give the same results. I think as one final attempt to resolve the matter before sending the system for repair I'm going to acquire a PAL PSU as that's the only thing I could think could be causing the issue. I'll let you all know how I get on.
The modder advised me to use a RGB SNES NTSC cable which I did with little success PSU will solve the issue
I think I maybe on to something. Could the fact that the system is without a jumper or ram expansion pak in the memory compartment by the issue? I think it could be the cause of my issues. Well anyway I've bought a Ram Expansion pak, hopefully once I get it, it will solve my problems
Uh... yeah. The jumper pak is a rambus terminator, and the expansion pak is a bunch of memory plus a terminator. So if neither is installed, the system has an open bus, and therefore, for all intents and purposes, no valid/usable ram. That may explain why nothing works
N64 cannot display error messages on screen. When anything fails, it's spectacularly UNhelpful blackness. Doesn't have a system boot logo or menus either. Like the other guys were saying you still get no picture unless a working (and compatible region) game, jumper pak, and video cable are all in place.
And balance is now restored lol. I've now got a jumper pak in my RGB modded N64 and it looks great on a CRT. Thanks for all your helps guys it's appreciated
Glad to hear. I'd still recommend getting a PSU from your region if you haven't done so already, if only for convenience's sake.
I already have I'm just waiting on it being delivered. It's just easier than having a step down transformer which is just big and bulky and kind of a hassle lol The RGB mod also makes my games shine on a Sony CRT, I didn't realise they could look this good. Maybe at some point I'll splash the cash and get a hdmi mod done for it.
