I was wondering if anyone here would be willing to do an N64 RGB mod for me. I'd be willing to pay for this service, obviously. I'm in the US, and it's an NTSC-U console we're talking about. I have 2 of them, and I believe (though I'm not 100% certain) that one of them is the correct model for the mod. I'm decent at soldering, but I don't have the right tools and in any case I don't think I'm skilled enough to do a mod like this.

There are a few concerns that factor into this. I would like to be certain that the RGB cable I have works with the mod. I have 2 SNES RGB cables. One issue is that, with these cables, there's often a buzzing over the audio. I don't know if the same issue exists for the N64, but if so I may want the audio to be routed separately - i.e. through RCA connectors on the back of the unit.

There also needs to be a ground connected to pin 17 (of the SCART connector), because that's how I wired my SCART to RCA cable. Finally, I've heard that in some cases the RGB signal from the N64 is faint and has to be amplified to give a good picture. If this is the case with my system, then I'd like that to be done.

If you think you can do this, or even part of it, please PM me.

I'd like to jump on this bandwagon as well. I've been looking for a complete RGB modded N64 or someone to do the service as I am no sort of handy man.

If anyone does this service please post information so that those who are interested can get in contact with you.

Yeah you need an amp, it should be simple enough.

Might want to get in touch with APE - I know he does this type of work over in the states.

Well I haven't decided if I want one or both of the N64's I've got RGB modded. More pressing matters at the moment.

PM'd la-li-lu-le-lo earlier about the topic, seems the PM system ate his first reply and awaiting the second.

I can handle the soldering end of things just fine, what I don't have on hand is a way to program the CPLD required for RGB modding non-RGB capable N64s. Though that isn't much of a hurdle honestly just a PITA to find someone to program the requisite part and get them to my door.

I can program the CPLD if you want, it's easy to do with the right tools. The downside is that I live in Argentina.

I was planning on purchasing a general purpose programmer shortly but the funds I was pseudo-promised have been delayed due to bureaucracy.

Tempted to install a CPLD into my spare N64s though, not sure if there is an American market for these mods given the lack of SCART capable TVs.

From the op's post, I was under the impression he wants 1 N64 modding and believes he has one thats moddable.

    No CPLD required.

Good comparisons - I got similar results.

However, the "very rare french N64" part isnt true - ebay.fr there are loads of them. I picked mine up for 4 euros console only.

Somehow I read it as "one that is probably moddable and one that I'd like modded but don't think it'd be as easy".

I was lucky a CRT I already have accepts low-res over component. So transcoding from RGB was fairly easy. Of course it's still a 60hz only set, PAL systems would roll to an extreme.

I'm trying to be reasonable. I don't want to bog modders down with excessive work, kill myself on back and forth postage, or get a bunch of mods I won't end up using enough to bother.

I love doing these mods for a million reasons, but lack of testing equipment kills me. The real kicker is that my college recently closed down their broadcast TV program and let the "video game/anime" club use a 50" TV with BNC connectors for RGB. Idiots cracked the tube...

Plus it helps pay for my college education, clearly a win-win for both parties.

Hi, I was wondering if there would be a benefit in adding this mod to my N64 if I live in North America and the only inputs I have on my TV are:

    composite
    component
    s-video
    VGA
    HDMI

Would there be a way to push the mod further to make it compatible with VESA standard signals to plug it on my VGA port? From what I understand, RGB standard divert only by the frequency of the H-SYNC and V-SYNC signals right? I too ordered an EverDrive 64 and I would really like to get the best possible image quality.

Another thing I was considering was the Innovation VGA adapter for SNES/N64/GC. These sells for about 30$. Are they any better than S-Video cables?

You can convert RGB to VGA using an X-RGB. They aren't cheap but they look wonderful.

Whatever this "Innovation VGA" adapter is it'll look like garbage at that price. Seriously, think like really bad RF on a TV from 1966 while drunk after being hit in the head with a baseball bat.

Yeah, I just bought one too and it works pretty well. Very pleased with the results.

BTW, does anyone know if a NUS-CPU-04 (rgb modifiable) will work with the amp mod? It lacks some of the components that rev 01-03 have and I have not found any conclusive info on the matter.

Thank you I'll look into this. I'd like to get the best possible picture quality to play N64 on my modern LCD TV. S-Video is great but this looks like a real improvement!

    That's my goal as well.

I already have an XRGB-3. I tried to connect the N64 to the xrgb-3 using a plain old SHVC-010 cable from SNES ... but presumably that won't work, since the N64 is not actually RGB-capable, out of the box ... correct ?

    Correct.

The mod is pretty simple but you have to make sure your N64 is RGB mod capable. If you are in the U.S. or Japan, anything CPU-rev-004 and below is fine. Elsewhere, I am not so familiar.
