i was hoping to get some advice on what may be causing this n64 to display a very dark image. it is about half as dark as a normal n64.

here is a pic of the display

and here is a pic of the same game in a working console using the same power cord/video cord and expantion pak to eliminate all non console related variables.

i also tried swapping the cart slot to see if that eould make any difference but it changed nothing.

here are a few pics of the board, it is an nus cpu 05

if someone knows what parts of the board are responsible for contrast/brightness it would be a huge help. if its a cap or resistor i can swap im sure i can manage.

When you hooked up the video off the “dark N64” to the TV, did you use composite or s-video (are both outputs dark)? Do you experience any issues with the audio?

i hooked it up using composite initially. just tried it with an svideo cable and svideo works normally. also the audio is unaffected wether i use compsite or svideo. audio is normal in both cases.

Then you've isolated it to one of the surface mount caps, resistors, or transistor in the composite video line between the multi av out and the encoder chip. Start at the multi av out and start tracing your way back and see what you hit first. It's probably a resistor.

I wish I had values for you, because even if you find exactly the component that went bad, you're going to need to know what to replace it with...
