I search for games who use sequenced music only (no streaming). Someone can give me some titles (10 titles it would be very nice ;-) ). For example Ikaruga use sequenced BGM, but I don't know if title like Border Down, Psyvariar or User Defeat use sequenced music. Can you help me ? thank !
whats the diference and why is it important to you? Are you a musician or something, now i'm curious.
correction about MIDI : sequenced music is not MIDI. MIDI is a communication protocol not a metod for making sequenced BGM. But MIDI use sequence. For example NES use sequenced music, but it's not MIDI. Final Fantasy games use sequenced music, but it's not MIDI. Almost BGM engines do not use MIDI for produce music. You can make a BGM with MIDI tools but your sound engine do not use inevitably MIDI. @ fisheye What do you mean ? I search for games who uses real sound hardware capabilities. Not "simple" streaming methods. Why it's important ? First, console's true sound capabilities are revealed only by sequenced music. Why put a sound hardware with a bunch of channels, environment effects, sound memory and do not uses them (for bgm not sfx) ? Second, I am preparing a music contest based on sound hardware (you hear the BGM, you finds the machine), not game title, but on modern console only few games uses sequenced BMG (especially Gamecube and Dreamcast. XBox do not enter in this contest because of his streamed based sound hardware). I have really many difficulties to find sequenced BGM on Dreamcast. I hope you can help me ;-)
i got it now, thanks for the enlightenment. Dreamcast sequenced bgm, hmmm... I guess crazy taxi is out of the question then
Eh eh, I awaited this question. There are several techniques. The most used is a searching for soundbank. It is not very dificult, moreover today soundbank format are standardized on moderns consoles (exept the Dreamcast... ). Another tips is to look if game program read disc during BGM. This technique does not always give good results because of large amount of memory on current machines. For example Gamecube has 16 Mby of memory for soundbank (and other stuff...), it is large enough for storing a compressed BGM at 44 Khz. In this case you can look at game structure. If game has frequent loading it may be that is sequenced music (if the game has one different BGM in each screen scene like RE or FF). For earlier models it is easy, sound memory is too small and can't store integrality of BGM file with good encoding. It results of two choice, sequenced or not. And Dreamcast game now ? ;-)
I remember Yakumo saying that the music in Jet Grind Radio is hardware produced. I believe most of the music in Shenmue 1 and 2 is hardware produced, excluding some of the symphonic stuff in the beginning of Shenmue 1. Perhaps I misunderstand what you are looking for, though.
jet grind radio hardware produced?? How can that be, it's stuff strait out of the interperters cds right?
@ la-li-lu-le-lo What are you misunderstanding ? Thank for information about Shenmue nad Jet Grind Radio.
I think you're confused. Jet Grind Radio and Shenmue don't have sequenced BGM (I'm positive about Jet Grind Radio; not too sure about Shenmue). I believe you're confusing that with CDDA vs. ADX. Jet Grind Radio and Shenmue all use ADX audio, except that one opening sequence in Shenmue uses CDDA.
I was surprised about Jet Grind Radio, but I remember Yakumo saying that in one of his Retro Core shows. And about Shenmue, a lot of the music sounds electronically produced to me. I would think that if it was simply prerecorded then they would use a live symphony. ADX is simply a type of audio encoding, like PCM or MPEG, isn't it?
Jet Grind Radio has vocals and what not, those tracks are for sure not sequenced, and why would they bother making the other tracks sequenced?
