As many of you might have heard about, a Cruise liner hit the rocks near The Giglio Island due to the captain's stupid bravado of trying to get as close as possible to the coast to "greet" the island's populace.

The ship hit the rocks and a hole long 70 meters was made in the lower part of the ship. The commander didn't order the evacuation for almost one our and denied the emergency at the port control center of Livorno.

The crew ammutinated and started evecuating the passengers (about 4000). The Captain Schettino was one of the first escaping from the ship.

This is the telefonic conversation he had with Captain De Falco (a man that became a sort of hero for his integrity cold mind and how he directed from remote the first aid) translated in various languages, mainly english

    the ship's about 300m long.

while the commander run away the board chief staied in until the ship suddenly rotated to about 90° and had his leg fractured. He was recovered alive one day later.

I can just say that i'm glad that for each Schettino here in italy we have a de Falco and one officer like that one.

Also people of isola del Giglio proved sensational in their effort to help the passengers. The island is slightly about 1000 inhabitants and hilly and had to absorbe 4 times as much refugees. many were hosted in public houses and in the church were they were given even cerimonial clothes to cover them from cold.

    just had to post this.

agreed about the fuel and due to the captains stupidity 16 people are dead

worst part is that he abandoned ship before all passengers and crew were safely off the boat - unbelievable, especially after being ordered back repeatedly by the coastguard

    his excuse is priceless tho:

""I was trying to get them into the lifeboats in an orderly fashion. All of a sudden the boat listed between 60-70 degrees, I got trapped and ended up in one of the lifeboats. That's why I was in there."
