Helllo, I have a Pc engine Duo R. I got my duo R with this problem. When I open the disc tray, it does'nt open as if it is spring loaded. The hatch does'nt extend open at all. this is not my pc engine this is the duo not the duo-r but the disc tray looks the same and where there looks like there should be the spring there isn't. If anyone knows about this problem or where I can get the spring, I would like to know.
You might be missing something, but bare in mind the PC-Engine DUO-R doesn't really have a full spring mechanism. It will just pop open ever so slightly and you'll have to open the rest of the tray yourself. It really only opens a bit just so you can grasp it.
No spring? I didn't know. I just figured it had a spring and it was lost. That is actually a pretty bad design , besides the single controller port. But that's how mine works it pops open a little bit and I open the whole tray myself, I really thought there was something wrong with it. Gamecube, PS1, Saturn and Dreamcast all open up nicely and my Duo opens ghetto, go figure. Those NEC guys were really greedy after all.
In my humble opinion, to defend "NEC the greedy", I personally prefer it with less mechanical parts. Having a spring just means there is more parts to wear out, especially if you use the console a lot (Obey!). Really the only convenience the spring gives you is that the door opens automatically. But who cares? I'd much rather open the door myself than have to worry about some flimsy spring that might have warn out or come loose and is now rattling inside the box (Have to open the whole thing up and hunt for it). I mean, how many times have you heard of people having spring and door problems with the PS1 (overuse, accidental dropping, unhooking, etc), or just about general build qualities from Sony? And compare that to how often you've heard people say the same thing about PC-Engine DUO-Rs or NEC?
Never and I mean never have I ever heard of someone saying a Playstation hatch was damaged, or a Gamecube. I have owned more than 8 and none of them had problems with springs and I found them at the goodwill and thrift stores! Those hatches are built like rocks. You wanna defend NEC, explain how you can benefit from a single controller port! When the gamecube has 4 and so does the Dreamcast no to mention the spring loaded disc trays, LOL. Don't get me wrong I love my PC engine but you have to realize when your getting ripped off by a game company. Whether it is hardware or a game that comes with DLC that should have been on the disc in the first place.
Ive had loads of broken GC's and PS1's lid mechanisms. "More than 8" is nothing. I have at least 4x that in my garage right now.
I've found this myself as well. My Dreamcast sometimes resets mid-game because it thinks something opened the door.
Ok, so I was wrong about the reliability of the spring-hatch. I guess I have just been really lucky with my own consoles. I only opened this thread because I love my PCE, but I still think having a single controller port is cheap. Is there another home console with only one controller port? (serious question, not a pessimistic remark)
Technically, a Wii U has NO controller ports Did the CD-i have more than one port? Of course, the 210 had a remote control as well... but I seem to recall it having a port, right?
