I have a LOT of points on my american express.
However, they raised the fees per year to get the "cool" card,
and I can't see spending that much money to have a
    flashy piece of plastic.

So I can get all kinds of things like ipod, etc, but in time those will be
worthless. So I was thinking of something quality, like a victorinox /swiss knife, or something similar with lifetime guarantee, and with long time
    value.

So besides the swiss knife what else can you think of that holds value?

Thinking more along the lines of something you can give a grandchild. A maglight would be fine if you were raising a thief.

If there is one thing on there you think you might actually use, I would get that. If you want something to retain it's value, get an item that's easy to sell if it's still NIB (an iPod for instance) and invest the money in a mutual fund.

I really hate these points, most of the items you can get are 100% useless.

Can't you transfer them into a gift card? I believe you can with the Amex Gold. Use that to get something elsewhere. What is the annual fee that you pay? They raised mine to $110. Since I'm back in school I plan on canceling the card.

I'm sure you can get a commemorative watch or something. If its something you want to pass along, you gotta have a wife first ;).

A good wristwatch stands the test of time. A nice Omega, Rolex, Patek Philippe, ect will hold its value.

I agreed, a wristwatch, ornamental clock or such will last, are valuable and can be passed down. Swiss army knives are nice but get the kind with a non-plastic handle or it just won't last.

Until my wife went mental about 10 years ago and spent a shit load of £ on stuff and then they took my platinum card I had some horrendous amount of points (400000+ or something silly) and never actually got around to using them as buggar all there apart from 1 airline ticket rather than two that kind of stuff. Or a free something that you can buy dirt cheap elsewhere

All a bit of a con really, but hey better than a poke in the eye

Go with the knife...always handy and something you would probably never actually buy

You should check out points.com and see if you can swap them into something there.

a nice ZiPPO maybe? they also have lifetime guarantee (doesn't Eastpak have that, too?) and you can always give it to your grandson, when he's old enough...
