What up folks, I need some help from you computer experts. I recently installed a new cpu (Pentium (R) dual-core E6800 3.33 ghz.) I'm using Core Temp to monitor the temperature, and it never goes above 75c. It idles at 40-45c usually,. It says the Tj. Max is 100c, I assume this is when the system would shut down?

Problem is, the system seems to just be shutting down and restarting randomly, even with the cpu idling at 45c. So I'm pretty sure it's not overheating which is causing this problem. I didn't install anything else besides this CPU, does anyone else know any reason as to what would case random shut down and restarts besides overheating?

    Thanks

Ok so I put the old CPU back in, and it's still happening, so thankfully it's not the CPU that's zonked. However now when I turn it on, it doesn't even get past the bios stage. It shuts itself down within 30 seconds. The CPU fan spins up also so I know the problem isn't there.

Anybody have any ideas? Could this be the power supply maybe?

Well it's hard to say. Have you stripped the PC back to its bare components? Single RAM chip, no PCI cards, etc and then tried to see if it boots then? It's likely that you've bumped something loose. It's also possible, but less likely, that you've fried something with static discharge, although I've never had this happen and I've never taken precautions against it.

Have you tried booting into safe mode? If you can, try to get to Event Viewer to see if there's any information in there that might hint at what's going wrong.

I reseated the Ram and video card, and the computer rebooted and has been up and running for about 10 mins. now. Thankfully looks like that part of this nightmare is over with. In the Event viewer it shows "Event ID 41, Source: Kernel Power" occurred 3 times, I'm assuming that's when the power goes out and it turns off without shutdown?

The Problem is though, twice today I was working in Word, and it actually asked me to save, then logged me out, then shut down. So the power didn't just instantly go off, it actually shut itself down.

Event viewer also says I have 38 CAPi2 events in the last 24 hours, so I'm assuming this is where all the restarts are coming from. But google tells me that this error is from having two sound devices installed? WTF?

Boot into your favorite distro of Linux using a LiveCD. If the computer runs happily like this, we know it's an issue with your OS.

If you don't wanna do that, try booting in safe mode and see if that makes a difference. I'm thinking it's a software issue. Could be anything from a driver to a rootkit. But probably a driver.

When my pc had the random reboot problem, it turned out that indeed the PSU was slowly dying. I remember that i could see in the bios that several power outputs where slightly lower that you would expect; 12v was 11,6 and 5v was 4,8 etc.
