Hey guys, I went and made a boneheaded mistake and now my video card is all screwed up.

Before I start, let it be known that I am not a super computer smarty. I read and study about this stuff on a daily basis, yet still manage to screw my computer up from time to time. So, feel free to laugh and stuff.

I was going through a site with a list of task list programs (trying to make my computer run faster and all) where I read that two items, hkcmd and igfxtray were related to intel chipset hotkey functions and were thus okay to disable from windows startup (via msconfig) So I did. Suddenly my screen got these horrible lines going through it, big black boxes, verticle collums, etc.

I have an ATI radeon 9800 pro graphics card and a 845g/ge/gl/gv/pe intel chipset on the motherboard, also running windows xp home edition. I have put the startup folder back the way it was, reinstalled the drivers for the radeon and the chipset, gone into safe mode and uninstalled the drivers and then reinstalled them, switched monitors, reinstalled the driver for the monitor, etc. all to no avail. As far as I can tell it's not a problem with the monitor or the chipset.

I've gone to several help forums and the only solution I can find is that maybe I somehow fried the memory on the graphics card, but I don't see how. All I did was disable two programs from startup, you'd think if I put them back everthing would be cool. I don't see why I should have to buy a whole new card becasue of this.

And so, before I blew my face off with a shotgun, I thought I'd ask you guys if you could help. Here is a pic of what my screen looks like:

see the horizontal lines? It's driving me crazy. Any help anyone could give would be great, shit, I'll pay you.

Did you put that lines on the picture to show how your screen looks or did you captured that using Print Screen or something similar? AFAIK, it's not a problem on the graphic cards if you can print screen the artifacts.
    Try reinstalling the windows

    Weird...

I don't have an ATI card ( I own a GeForce3 ) but i would suggest you to try the videocard on another computer to see if the problem persists.

If not, then it's probably something related to your motherboard.

www.guru3d.com is a good site to ask for info and help.

    Hope you find a solution.

Agreed. Also if you've got an old PCI VGA card stick it in and see if the display looks the same.

You know fellas, I turned on the computer today and everything is fine. It's all back to normal. I don't know what happened, but everything works.

BTW, I didn't alter the image in anyway, I used screenprint 32 to get the image.

Well, thanks anyway. God damn this confuses me.

That's a PC for ya. It gives you trouble but then the next day everything is back to normal. Goes to show you what happens when you mess with the little things in the engine.
