I just pulled out and hooked up my Net Yaroze that I have had boxed away for some time now and I am having some audio problems with it. Everytime I put a game in to play, their is no audio for the intro or cutscenes of the games but their is sound being played for the in-game portions. Any help or advice would be appreciated. Thanks.
I tried cleaning the laser. I even tried changing out the laser with another laser and it still does the same thing, no sound playing on FMV / Cutscenes only. I thought it may have been the laser but after changing it out, I think it's something else. Anyone have any clues? Thanks for looking.
It's some problem with the ADPCM decoder. The ADPCM decoder on the CD drive chipset. Since you have synthesized music and sound effects working, the problem is "semi minor". There's three sound sources on the PS1 hardware: SPU (native sound chip) CD-ROM ADPCM (this plays streams read from disc, be it music or audio played from movies) CD-ROM CD-DA (this plays audio tracks) The SPU chip receives audio from the CD-ROM through an I2S channel and mixes with it's own audio internally. Did you test audio CDs ? Do you hear anything from audio CDs ?
Tekken 2 uses ADPCM streams for it's music. It's a good game you could use to test. Also it has an intro movie. Some Square games use custom audio compression instead of the ADPCM so Legend of Mana, for example might have sound on it's movies in your faulty Yaroze. If you have these games give them a try.
Well, I tried Tekken 2 on my system and their was no sound for the intro movie and no music during the game. I think you may be on to aomething.
Squaresoft games use the SPU for music (it's MIDI) so it will have music. I forgot to mention that Legend of Mana uses synthesis for music as well so you will have music in it. Just see if it has sound on the movies.
I was going to mention that Final Fantasy games use normal video streams with standard ADPCM. But you already noticed that. Mana is one of the games I know use non standard audio on it's videos.
Damn, looks like I'm gonna have to try and track down a new Net Yaroze for myself. It's a shame, I have had this Net Yaroze since 1997. Thank you for your help l_oliveira.
