    Hey Guys

As some of you are probably aware, ive recently come into possession of several xbox debug units, which have a wealth of information on them (me does a lil dance!)

    However, i have 2x XBOX HDD's that are currently Password locked, 1 is a WD80EB from a debug, the other is a Seagate U Series 5 from a DVT4

They both freeze when connected to a debug on the flubber animation, and in my modded xbox they come up with error 06 (locked HDD)

Now i know there are tools to unlock both of these drives, but they would lead to losing what data there may be stored on the HDD, so thats not really a option

I have tried several different ways of unlocking them, including hotswapping etc. but they havent worked

I have a couple of idea to try yet, one would be swapping the pcb's over from known working drives, but unsure how this would affect the data on the drive, so am going to experiment first using 2 other HDD's

Does anyone have any suggestions on how i might be able to recover the data on these drives? if i did use the unlocking software i have, would there be any way of recovering the data on the blanked drives?

Any responses would be greatfully appreciated

    DD

Sadly not, as the HDD's are masterlocked, you physically cannot boot into windows with them as it asks for the masterpassword just after post

Probably your best bet is to swap the PCBs over from one drive to another, providing the drives are of the same model, the data stored on the drives should be fine ;)

Oh, and good luck, let us know how it goes.

Yeah sorry, when i say model thats kind of what i mean, exactlly the same revision drive. I woudn't consider a drive the same brand, but with a different PCB the same model, but thats just my way of speach i guess.

    Good luck diddydonn.

Same here, i can unlock both the seagate and WD HDD without problem at all and have done it many times in the past, but by doing this i could be potentially losing the data completly (if there is any at all on the drives)

I still have a few options to try, one of which is to use a spare old drive, dump some data on it, lock it, use the software to unlock it, and then see what i can recover, as i have a few progs that will read from a fatx drive and attempt file recovery,

Failing that im sure theres some sort of bruteforce file recovery software that may work on it, even if i can only retrive a list of filenames at least i can figure out from there if there is any data worth recovering or not before i proceed further

This might be a question to ask over at X-S.

Not that it may help (and being that I haven't had a modded Xbox in some time), but worth a look...what BIOS are you running on the modded Xbox?

Are they anything like retail units? Those were locked to the board, so you had to leave the drive with that board. Are the drives in their original machines?

Well on a dev/debug kit you can lock the hdd to the motherboard if needed but it makes so much harder when you don't have the matching motherboard to go with the hdd which is diddydonn dilemma.

To answer Retros question, usually with Debug / DVT Units, the HDD's are not locked to the motherboard unlike retail Xbox's, which is why this is unusual, however the HDD being locked could be due a variety of reasons, corrupted data, bad firmware, power surge to the HDD, the latter is most likely as all the debugs were originally 110v Units, and looks like someone has plugged them into 220/240v power, thus blowing the PSU and possibly damaging the HDD

And to answer Evil ways Question, i have 3 different modded xbox'xi have tested on, 1 has a Xecuter 3 with latest bios, another is a xecuter 2.6 and the 3rd is a Xenium ice, i would post over at X-S, but to be fair i would rather keep this going here, a as soon as i post about what maybe on the HDD i will get flooded with PM's asking me to release the data i have

I have tested out the software that Pikkon sent the link to, and it does say in the diagnostics that it could unlock the HDD's, however $50 per drive seems excessive as there may not be anything on the HDD's which is why im looking at free options at the moment

Well most of all the software that I have seen will cost money.I wonder if there's a way you could see how much space is left on the hdd.
Also I would keep trying to hot swap.

Well i bit the proverbial bullet and paid the $50 to get the drive unlocked, and it did indeed unlock the drive!

Unfortunatly it still refuses to boot when connected to the debug, however i have managed to make a raw image of the drive on my PC using winhex, and using a couple of fatx explorer programs there is indeed data on the drive

All of it is dated from 2001, but whether that is just what the program is saying or the actual dates i do not know,

There is a wealth of information on the drive itself, although i have yet to find any bootable XBE's on there, it appears that the data refers to a skateboarding game, if this is from acclaim then the only similar game i can think of is BMX XXX, but this doesnt appear to be the same game, as have compared the directory tree from the original game and it is completely different

My next step is to make sense of the data, and i am also going to try and clone the content of the HDD onto another one, as it does look like the XDK dash is still intact

Will update further when i find out more!
