Hi all, I'm trying to find out specific release dates for two games. I know they both came out in 1981 but I need to know the month (and day preferably) 1. Spacechase (Atari 2600) 2. The Count (Commodore)
With a lot of early games it's hard to find release dates of games especially from smaller companies, the best you're likely to find is the month or period of release. Games magazines aren't much help as some will review games well after they come out or even before they come out. Sometimes the authors can't remember when the games came out... I've had arguements with various over release dates of games as they make claims about game x being first game but I pointed out they weren't. For example a writer claimed that Doom on the Super Nintendo was the first game to get a M rating by the ESRB until I pointed out that Eternal Champions on the Sega CD had that honour. As well as the claim that Galaxian was the first true pixel colour game until I pointed to Taitos Super Speed Race had pixel colour (it was blockier but still pixel colour...) and was released a year earlier (in Japan).
I thought as much. The reason I ask is because I entered a competition to find the earliest game to feature a day/night cycle. My suggestion was Spacechase and another guy said The Count. There was only one prize, Warriors Orochi on the PS2 and it was a draw since both games came out in 1981 and they couldn't work out which came out earlier in 1981. Now it looks like neither of us will get the prize unless we can find out which game was released first.
