Hi all So, just got a faulty Neo Geo AES, serial number 147313. Was listed as faulty due to graphical corruption. Before I get into the console just wanted to check in here and see if its an obvious fault. I do not have the official PSU, but a quick search showed that it is a 10V 1A centre negative supply, so I have set my switchable PSU to 12V and it can supply up to 3.5A so that should be more than sufficient. Switch on with no game and you get a blue screen. Switch on with a game (my only game) and you get short corruption then blue screen. I made a short video.
Blue = All tests passed (does not test z80). Red = WorkRAM error (0x100000 region). Green = PaletteRAM error (0x400000 region). Yellow = VideoRAM error (programmed through custom port). Pink = Bios selfcheck error (0xC00000 region). Cyan = Memory card error (only tested if card in unit and blank).
Ok thanks for that, I guess the corruption and inability to load the game could simply be dirty contacts. Anything worse than that and I'm going to have to open her up and take a look. Although not exactly sure what I should be looking for.
so if you start the console without a game inserted, you get a blue screen. did you tested with another game? or try to clean the contacts from the cardtridge
It's my only game Neo Geo collecting is expensive. The seller sold it with this graphical corruption issue, so I am assuming it is not just my game that is causing it.
or maybe a problem with the cartridge slot on the neo geo, start without a game inserted and blue screen seems normal. try to clean first the cartridge, and take a picture from the mobo of the neo geo, maybe capacitor-trace ect...
Ok, I had assumed it starts the internal BIOS when booted with no games, however if that is not the case then maybe you are right. I am intending to fit the UniBios to the Neo Geo, once that is installed it should give me more options to test the system. But before that, yes I shall check and clean all the contacts as best I can.
if i start my neo geo without a game,i also get blue screen,i tested it when i buyed the system 10 years ago. thought that also was fault, but searched the internet and it seems normal, try to get a cheap game or try your game on another neo geo if possible to see what your game does.
you may want to install a DIP socket to the Neo Geo motherboard so you can use the Diagnostics Bios. It checks and targets components in your Neo Geo and reports back if there any problems. http://smkdan.eludevisibility.org/neo/diag/ also Deoxit is a really good cleaner , you may want to pick some up. My Neo Drift Out MVS cart had a problem even after cleaning with Isopropyl and a rubber. But then i tried Deoxit Red and Gold and the MVS cart runs beautiful now. So yeah use it to clean your cart and slot
After cleaning contacts and the board in general it is now working. However I have some odd issues with Samuri Spirits 2, see pictures below. I have some issues with overly bright parts of the output. For example the region message should have a black background, the insert coin and energy bars in game are completely white. Very strange. I will try this special bios, however I don't have a controller yet so I won't be able to choose any options.
