I thought questioning about it my other thread about my MVS but i think i start a whole new thread to not confuse a lot of people. So is 240 volt compatible in europe? As This is about the aes console which arrived today and i am confused about the powersupply as it turns out its jaguar UK powersupply. I know that both germany and uk have 230 volts and 50 hz. But this is 240 volt. I thought about buying a plug adapter tomorrow so i can plug it in on a shuko/europlug socket but i am a bit worried if 240v will blow up my system. Yeah i know its sure a noob question but i want to be sure since last time i tried to plug up a japanese psx with a plug adapter on my power i destroyed the powersupply because i had no voltage converter as japan runs at 110v.
In reality 220V/230V/240V is all the same. They are nominal voltages and the only thing you can guarantee about the voltage in the socket is that it's unlikely to match the nominal voltage. The UK hasn't officially been 240V for a long time, even though the voltage you get from the sockets in your house might not have changed at all. "For many years the supply voltage for single-phase supplies in the UK has been 240V +/- 6%, giving a possible spread of voltage from 226V to 254 V. For three-phase supplies the voltage was 415 V +/- 6%, the spread being from 390 V to 440V. Most continental voltage levels have been 220/380V. In 1988 an agreement was reached that voltage levels across Europe should be unified at 230V single phase and 400V three-phase with effect from January 1st, 1995. In both cases the tolerance levels have become -6% to +10%, giving a single-phase voltage spread of 216 V to 253 V, with three-phase values between 376V and 440 V. It is proposed that on January 1st, 2003 the tolerance levels will be widened to +/- 10%." I can only imagine that 240V is listed on the power supply, so that people who thought the UK had 240V weren't scared to plug it in. Some more information here: http://wiki.diyfaq.org.uk/index.php?title=Electricity_Basics Some equipment marked as 240V might be a problem, but this outputs 9V and is going to get regulated to 5v or even 3.3v somewhere inside the AES so I personally wouldn't worry. You can probably sell the jaguar power supply for more than you could buy a 230V power supply though.
As long as your Jaguar PSU was intended for this console, it would be OK... but there were TWO different PSUs for different models of the AES, with different outputs. smf... it was actually agreed in the UK on 9 March 1993 and, as you said, the standard changed in 1995. The Atari Jaguar was released here in 1994, so before the standard had officially changed. Hence it would be marked 240 volts.
