I've been thinking of buying a Neo Geo for a while and somebody has offered me a bundle. It consists of: Neo Geo AES console (Jap) Neo Geo CD controller (boxed) GAMES: SENGOKU JAP EDITION 3 Count Bout World Heroes World Heroes 2 Riding Hero Samurai Showdown Crossed Swords Nam 1975 GHost Pilots Blues Journey Magician Lord The Next Glory Allegedly the console, joystick, and some of the games are brand new and unused. I'm slightly sceptical about that as there's no way of proving it (as far as I know) so what would be a fair price (in the UK) for all of the above? I have a price but would rather know what you think without any bias. Cheers.
I don't know UK prices specifically, but I think US$800 would be around the global going rate for the lot. Many of those titles are still available new for under $30 apiece. Since you're buying in bulk you should receive some sort of discount... If the more valuable items turned out to be beat up I would be upset at $800. In the past many people have spent over $800 on "new" AES alone, but today it's too hard to authenticate and anyone asserting that their system has never been used (even a little bit) is probably lying/misinformed.
Thanks for the reply, I appreciate it. Yes wether or not it's new/unused is what's making my decision hard. If it is, based on your estimate it's a good deal. But if not, then it's a bad deal. I don't know a lor about Neo Geos, but for example a used SNES is worth $30, and a new one is worth $300, so the price difference is potentially massive.
It goes without saying but make SURE you can really afford getting into AES. That's a steep road to think about.
I think you'd have to be nuts dropping $800 on an AES because there may be no discernible difference between a $400 mint console and an $800 new console. 7 years ago I bought a "new" AES with a new (sticker sealed) $70 game and "new" $100 accessory for $400-500, I think that was a fair deal because I wasn't overwhelmed with satisfaction. After heavily scrutinizing my console I'm still not sure if my console was used or if it had "factory wear" on the plastic and "storage wear" on the box. I've played it of course, and I think anyone else would do the same, even if just to test it... $800 for a verifiably new Neo Geo MIGHT be a fair price, if that's that's what the market makes it, but that's definitely not the intrinsic value of the console today. When new stock was being sold at the Neo store for $1200 they didn't sell very fast, and the console might have still been alive at that point. The highest I could see consoles selling for today is $500, any more and you're putting an arbitrarily large value into entropy in the form of factory/shipping/storage wear, and believe me the wear is non-trivial since SNK didn't protect consoles (and box games at least) from eachother in shipping and everything was (sometimes sloppily) hand assembled. Imagine paying a large sum for a sealed game only to open it up and find a misaligned label... That's Neo Geo collecting.
OK thanks guys, appreciate the input. Sounds like I should definitely do more research before diving in.
Have you thought about maybe purchasing a consolized neo geo mvs? Even if the console itself is more expensive, You´ll save money down the road as the mvs versions of games are a lot cheaper and there are affordable multicarts for mvs too.
Unless you absolutely must have an AES for the boxes, the manuals and the artwork, do your self a favour and get a consolized MVS. For the price you'd be paying you could probably get a 4 slot MVS and buy all of the games on that list. Really if you just want to play games MVS is the way to go, AES games are about $400 per game for big titles, some games go up to thousands or even tend of thousands of dollars depending on what region you want, there really is no cheap way about it. MVS games on the other hand go up to like $250 tops for the most collectible games, on average games are around $25 - $100 for the big titles. Honestly you could get five or ten MVS games for the price of one AES game.
