File this in "the pretty cool but who the fuck needs this" catagory http://www.analogueinteractive.com/store.php
i like it, would go better with my furniture. my girlfriend made me put my own mvs in storage because it looks like a heap of shit. besides the cost, what about heat dissipation, or does that matter?
The hardware of the Neo Geo doesn't get very hot, also I guess the builder factored the oprating temperature in.
Yeah let me tell you. Mine needs to look better too (but not for that reason). It's TOUGH to find americans with time/skill for custom mvs projects. Few do it, fewer are available at a given moment. I'll likely be in line quite a while if my idea even ends up going through.
I don't get it. For $649 you could get a beautiful authentic home system and games, made from plastic by SNK, not wood by some guy. Also nothing screams high-end or Japanese design like a bright blue LED, surplus panel-mount barrel jacks and rocker power switches, yup. Oh and wooden electronics.
But you have to acknowledge two things: - it is good craftsmanship - it is a very unique item People over on ng.com are loving this, to each their own I guess, I'd rather get a cabinet for that money.
Yeah I agree on that, it's fine craftsmanship. It will be a collectible item. It only lacks the logos probably of copyright reasons... I haven't seen the bottom of the unit, maybe it has a serial # on it... also who crafted. It would be nice.
It took me several reads to understand what you were saying. I read it as "Pretty cool, but who the fuck needs this category?" I was thinking, What does "this catagory" refer to? The category of wooden CMVS's? Of what larger group is that a category? Then I realized "who the fuck needs this" was the category. Hm. In any case, you could use an extra verb or two there, sport. As far as the console itself, it looks pretty cool, but I would never buy it. I don't really get the point of consolizing an MVS in the first place. If you're going to play an arcade system on a TV, it makes more sense to build an interchangeable rig, so you can swap different PCB's without having to build an entire "console" every time. If the reason is aesthetics, it makes more sense to buy an AES and use one of those converter dealies. The AES is one of the most beautiful consoles ever, IMO. A side note; although I have an MVS (1-slot), I only have one game for it: Blazing Star. I'd really like to get Metal Slug, but it seems there's always something more important to buy. I'd also like to build a box for my supergun setup, as it's really unattractive to just leave PCB's and wires hanging all over the floor. One day.
The reason why the MVS was invented by SNK in the first place was so you don't have to swap PCB's every time, so this is somehow an ironic statement in my opinion. Also there are a lot of people who only care about Neo Geo (or insert other cartridge based arcade system here) and not much about anything else arcade, but don't have the dough for an AES setup and still want something decent looking in their living room. CMVS setups are for them.
I can presume it's skillful craftsmanship, I'm not a woodworker so I'm not sure, but I don't think it's very skillfully thought out. It can be assumed this creation is a good willed product of Neo love, but I kind of doubt SNK would find it all that respectful considering it's in direct opposition to their interests both as IP holders today, and as the group whose product is the basis of this unauthorized derivative. To me it's ostentatious folk art that reaps glory from a beloved dead platform. And they are who the marketing and price point panders to. It already violates copyrights due to inclusion of the infringing UniBIOS. It might violate (expired) design patents as well. Depending on fair-use laws it may or may not be a legal product due to its very inclusion of MVS hardware.
SNK playmore, who holds the rights for almost everything made by the original SNK may not officially support this, but they have respect for their fans who are keeping the platform alive after all those years. They won't sue the hell out of someone like Apple does. They even keep in touch with their fans through interviews, reflecting this.
It's ironic to the extent that any use of technology beyond what the manufacturer intended is ironic.
Of course they would, people who buy Neo Geo stuff generally have a lot of money they need to waste on something
CMVS systems almost always, and in my experience always, cost more than a AES console. Much more. You really could get an AES + Convertor for the same or less than many CMVS systems. What kills AES is the cost of the games versus MVS which is why people do CMVS. I bought my NeoGeo MV-1 a long while back for somewhere less than $80 which I believe came with KoF 99'. I built a Supergun and controllers and had alot of fun for not that much money. While a neat little NeoGeo console would be nice and use less space, the cost is insane. I'm sure for some people that the quality (judging through the pictures) will justify the price based apon what other CMVS tend to be listed at. Ofcourse the other reason I went the SuperGun route was that I had other games I wanted to play like Street Fighter, Mortal Kombat, etc.
I changed my mind. Good job but way too big, seems ugly too me, like camouflaged on the parquet floor... http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/120817486793?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1423.l2649 New Ebony Slim model may be desirable...
