Hello, I recently came across a 161 in 1 multicart for the NEO GEO MVS. Unfortunately, I only own an AES. I do not have a very large budget but I would like to be able to play it. Can anyone help me? Let me know. Thanks. I am willing to buy a converter or consolized MVS if in the right price range.
My apologies, I won't do that in the future. I just wanted to post it in sections I thought it would be relevant.
Go for a consolized. There's no trust worth converter at the moment that will give you no trouble. Every single one presents a flaw in some area. The Phantom-1 won't boot gfx encrypted games. Like King of Fighters 98 and forward. The Super MVS converter II has scalings problems with games that uses zoom. Like Last Blade. The Daedalous is expensive and ugly. Since the Neo Geo had so many revisions it could implicate in the converter not working properly on your system but working ok on others. So go for a consolized with unibios.
veggav, thank you so much for the advice! You just saved me a load of money and trouble! Would you mind telling what board version, parts etc you suggest for best compatibility with creating my consolized MVS? Please PM me if you would be interested in helping me build it. Thank you again so much!
Most people use the vertical one slot. Myself I was hoping to have a two slot consolized, but plans are on hold because I haven't found an enclosure builder to make it really look like a console.
I can't believe I'm saying this as I despise emulation..but that's your cheapest option. I have no clue why people buy shit like the 161 in 1. If you're going to be a skank just use roms. If you want the 'original' feel, then buy originals and have fewer games. Don't support scumbags akin to thieves with your coin on these fakes. (Or convert the 161 MVS freakjob into a homecart..actually don't..enough killed carts out there already.)
The 161 in 1 is made using recycled parts from other cartridges and even if it uses roms, it will be CRC match. Edit: just checked it won't match by a little bit of code that executes to be able to reset. The 161 in 1 uses a FPGA for the menu and when you select a game it uses an internal dipswitch do make a rom bank visible. There's not a bit of emulation involved and what you say makes absolute no sense. I've used the MV-1C board because that was the one I had in hand. It's small. It has vertical slot, that will give you the feeling of a console. But beware that it will be a pain to install the Unibios on those. With other MVS boards the Bios uses a socket so all you need is to remove and insert the new one. This is the result of my consolization inside an AES shell. http://www.assemblergames.com/forum...hed-project-MVS-(MV-1C)-inside-an-AES-shell!! The other thing you will need is a RGB to s-video/composite/component (whatever you need) converter. I've used the AD725 because that was the one I had. You will need a little bit of soldering skill. The image the AD725 is brighter for my taste so another option would be using the NeoBitz board that can take RGB and will output s-video/composite in the cheapest model and component in the most expensive one. I've modded my AES to be able to use the NeoBitz on a external box and the image is fantastic, one of the best RGB converters I know of. Besides that you will need DB15 connectors for the controllers and a PSU. You can use a 3 amp +5v that will be enough. Since I like things with a little more security I've used the Pico PSU a very small computer PSU that has no fans or anything. Jamma-nation-x has several tutorials for consolization, it will look like complicated in the beginning but it isn't. http://www.jamma-nation-x.com/jammax/tutorials.html
I never said there was? I was assuming that the OP wants to play Neo games...he has a 161...does not have a large budget...so I skipped a step and suggested he should just go the emu route...free assuming he has a PC / Xbox already. Perhaps I should have said Sell / store / throw away the 161...I can't believe I'm saying this as I despise emulation..but that's your cheapest option. But I assumed people would get that. As to the rest...161 = fake piece of shit made by opportunists to sate the 'want want want' culture we live in. Sad.
Ok, not I got your point either way: I must say Yeah... because replacing, blowing, cleaning, tons of different cartridges was a very nice culture. The 161 in 1 is the closer you can get on the real deal with the less effort for people that want the real deal. On a blind test you would never guess if it's the 161 in 1 or a real cartridge.
