I know there's a lot of people in here that love the 'ol Neo Geo (most of which are probably over on proper NG forums as well).

    First, there's this:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q_kGJBv6Wr4
Neo Geo music video. (mainly I just wanted to show everyone this)

Now that you're done with that, here's a few questions:

    1. Can you remember the first time you played a Neo Geo?
    2. Can you remember what game it was?
    3. What is your favorite game, or which one have you played the most?
    4. Which looks better, a western cabinet (in either red or gold) or a Japanese cab?

    ______
    Me:
    1. Yes, it would have been at a local comic shop where my brother and I bought our Warhammer figures (I used to save the $3 and $4 a week allowance my parents gave me and then blow it on a regiment, haha). I was probably... 12ish? My brother made a big deal about this big red machine, and we played...
    2. Metal Slug of course. And some fighting game, but the details and I didn't want to play competitively so I don't remember what it was. Probably KOF but who knows what version.
    3. I've played a lot of Metal Slug 1 and 2 on my MVS, but I think I've played Last Blade 2 the most.
    4. The red cabs remind me of something... the style is just perfect. For some reason there's a correlation to that design/shape and color of cabinet and my favorite car, the Lancia Delta Integrale...

    1. First played Neo in 1993 at a hole in the wall comic store a block from my kiddie school.
    2. First game was Samurai Shodown (soon after played World Heroes at a pizza parlor which SUCKED so much compared to the Super Street Fighter beside it)
    3. Back in the day definitely Bust a Move, favorites would have to be SamShos and early MSlugs.
    4. Candies only! Once upon a time I did dig reds, they seemed mysteriously retro even in the mid 90s :p

    1. Firts played it at a local arcade around 1996, the MVS of course
    2. It was KOF94
    3. KOF2002, i play it everyday, no matter in what console i have plugged in to the tv (AES or dreamcast)
    4. Japanese cabs have a nice feeling to them, despite the cabinet itself being absolutely horrible.

    1. Only had a chance to play the ports since Arcades here were forbidden if you were under 18... I think the 1st one I played was KOF95 so I gues it was around that year 95
    2.KOF95 maybe
    3.Garou MotW
4.Never saw a red cab IRL, but candy cabs rock

1 - It was either the old Telegames store in town or at the GamesMaster Live show at the NEC in 1992. Home Cart on both occasions.

2 - Definately remember having a good crack on 8 Man at GamesMaster. Also won one of the Sonic 2 challenges on the Sega Bus and had my first go with VR.

    3 - Last Blade 1 & 2, Garou: MotW and Blazing Star.

4 - Really don't like woodie cabs. Much prefer a nice white Super Neo 29 or Astro City.

    1. First played neo-geo aes at one of my lucky richie rich classmate in 1991, i was 11.

    2. He had mostly all the debut line up, Magician Lord, Cyberlip, SuperSpy.

    3. King of fighters 95, one of my favs, not my favorite therefore but surely the one i've played the most.

    4. Candy cabs even if they're not easy to catch at a good price in Europe, you'll mostly find wood cabs here for cheap but not my taste at all.

    1. Can you remember the first time you played a Neo Geo?
Well, it's not that long ago. The first time I played it in the arcade must have been in California in 2006. They had a 4-slot in the Bodega Bay seaside restaurant and I played a bit of Metal Slug 2.

My first contact with Neo Geo games was in 2003. Yeah, I was really late, but then again I've only been 14 at the time and the Neo was already vintage hardware. And as we do not have any arcades in Germany (no entrance under 18!) where I could have played it as a kid I have a lack of arcade-experiences in general, at least regarding my childhood.

    2. Can you remember what game it was?
Arcade (2006): Metal Slug 2 & Shin Samurai Spirits
    MAME (2003): Metal Slug 1, X, 3

    3. What is your favorite game, or which one have you played the most?
Blazing Star is really awesome, but I yet have to buy the MVS version. Once I can play it with sticks, I'll probably spend an awful lot of time on it. Windjammers is also one of my favourites. Just priceless in multiplayer. Gewonnen! Au!

    4. Which looks better, a western cabinet (in either red or gold) or a Japanese cab?
The red cabinets look nice (very original), but they're so clumsy!! Classic Western monster cabinet style... I'd prefer the Japanese candy cabs anytime. The Neo-19 is my favourite, but it's not that nice to play on it I guess. Small screen and small cabinet etc.

At a friend's I always play on the Super Neo 29 I. It has a fantastic screen, maybe a tad sharp for modern games, but classic PCB's and Neo Geo games look absolutely stunning!! Pure RGB scanline & color insanity.

    Yes around 1991
    Probably Ghost Pilots
In a break from the normal 1 on 1 fighters or Metal Slug n that people will put, it is Puzzle Bobble and Viewpoint
What you mean to say is... (as america does not equal the whole of the western world).
    4. Which looks better, an American cabinet (in either red or gold), an early Japanese Neo Geo cabinet, a later Japanese cab or the European Electrocoin cabinet?
The simple answer is a Electrocoin 6 slot cabinet.

I was trying to include all variations in one short sentence... aparently I failed.

I suppose the one in your picture is more grey than gold.

    1. Probably 1990 or early 1991. The local arcade had one in, with Top Player's Golf, Cyber-Lip, and Baseball Stars Professional. Maybe Nam '75 too.
    2. Cyber-Lip, of course!
    3. Metal Slug X rules above all others!
    4. Western Cab (though I really love those tiny, tiny, cute Japanese ones.)

AlecJahn, since you're from Wichita did you ever go to Towne East when Aladdins Castle was still around? It seems like I remember them having one of the Shodowns running on a huge monitor (probably around 95 or 96), but its been so long ago I can't really remember if that's where I saw it.

    1. Some time around 1990 or 1991 at the local Aladdins Castle. That place had a couple Neo Geo MVS cabs for years and they were pretty good about updating with new games.
    2. The first game I played was Nam 1975. Didn't actually play it alot, but I thought it was fairly fun at the time.
    3. I played quite a bit of KOF 94-96, Art of Fighting I&II, Fatal Fury 1&2, Aero Fighters, Metal Slug of course, King of the Monsters (which I think is really underrated), Samurai Shodown 1&2, The Super Spy, Puzzle Bobble, 3 Count Bout. I actually like all the World of Heroes. Now days I'll really only play World of Heroes 2 or Jet. The first one is just to crude compared to the sequels. The death modes were kind of fun. It had some pretty wacky creative characters like Rasputin, Muscle Power (the Hulk Hogan clone), or Brocken (the weird Nazi/SS cyborg soldier). Some of the moves and animations were pretty nice. I think it's at least one of the better SF clones.
    4. Its tough since I think they're all visually appealing, but I really like the shape of the large red Western cabinet with the striped control panel and red, yellow, green, blue button layout. Of course nostalgia plays a part in my answer.

The Electrocoin and the American cabinets are very different though, I have used both and I do prefer the Electrocoin one. I've also used both Japanese cabinets too, hence being qualified to pull you up on your daft question. Next you'll be saying which do you prefer Western or Japanese cars...

My first memory of playing a Neo Game was sometime in 1992 just a few minutes after playing Street Fighter 2 the first time....

    2. Can you remember what game it was?...and that game was Fatal Fury

    3. What is your favorite game, or which one have you played the most? Samurai Shodown II but I've played KOF 2000 more.

    4. Which looks better, a western cabinet (in either red or gold) or a Japanese cab? Western. I have no Love for Candy Cabs

Come on Jamtex. You know I'm not a total idiot.

I apologize for my oversight (undersight?) and failure at writing a complete post. My mistake, I bow and return to my hole.

I have lived on the West side my entire life. There used to be an Aladdin's on the west side. I didn't go there too much (because aparently I'm a fucking idiot... or at least didn't see the demise of the arcade culture) and only really played Soul Blade and DDR and a few other random things. I didn't even make it to the East mall until at least the mid-2000s. I played Virtal On properly for the first time, there. And watched some older guys play Initial D (I really wanted to play but they all seemed to know each other and I didn't want to intrude with my n00b sk33lz).

I've been to both. I frequented East the most since I knew all the people that worked it, so most the time I played for free. Aladdins East was a little larger with more games. There use to be a second arcade there, but it wasn't quite as popluar.

They were already getting noticeably smaller crowds by '98/'99. Back in the late 80's, early 90's, you'd see an average of at least 10 people gathered around the fighters and beat'em ups on weekend (even awful ones like Pit Fighter). Sometimes it would take hours just to get a turn on the popular games like MKII.

The whole social experience and atmosphere is something you just can't get from online gaming now. Those were the days... :crying:
