Neo Geo Pocket | JP boxes Hey folks ! I was just looking for some Japanese Neo Geo Pocket games and noticed that there are different kinds of boxes. The first one I saw were the ones made of pasteboard like snes games. And then I saw games made of plastic (?), so called clamshells ? Why do they use different boxes for these games and is there a list which shows the different kinds of Japanese NGP game boxes ? Greetings Hackfleisch
It's mainly stuff that was released at the end of the Neo Pocket's (short) life that was released in card boxes, as for a definitive list my best guess would be to try neogeo.com.
Pocket Master List As far as I'm aware, it's only the SNK Best Collection re-releases that came in clamshell cases in Japan. The games were normally released in cardboard packaging. I think that the original few Neo Geo Pocket (B&W) games were released in clamshells as well.
I'm using the Master List of neogeo.com, too. It's pretty good. ebay-link This one for example has such a box, what do you think about it ? It's obviously a color game. Pocket Tennis was released in a clamshell, too. @Consumed Thanks for the answer. The European releases were all in clamshells, right ? Why should SNK change the boxes in Japan in such a short time period ? Strange strange strange
SNK did some strange things with the Pocket, like removing the battery back-up from some versions of Bust-A-Move and leaving it in others and releasing games no-one would ever buy like Pac-Man and fruit machine sims. It's little wonder the console bombed
Well that means that I'm wrong and it wasn't just the Best Collection games that came in clamshells I've come across a couple of other NGPC game lists over the years but I'm sure none of them specify what kind of packaging the Japanese games had. Indeed they were, it's one of the very rare occurrences in video gaming where the PAL/European games are (imho) more desirable than their Japanese or US counterparts.
Unfortunately, AFAIK the PAL versions are very rare now, plus only some of the games were ever released in Europe to begin with...
