Hi, I want to replace a NEOGEO CD bios with the free Universe Bios, but I want to use a SMD chip, NOT the DIP->PLCC socket adapter (neobiosmasta or whatever it's called). I guess it's the same thing as the Saturn's bios replacement, so a 29f400/29f800 will probably work, but can someone confirm that? TIA.
Long as it's the right size and you can get the pins in the right place - they are all read the same way. Ive done this exact mod before and made a PCB for it years ago. But raz wasn't interested in letting me supply it. And most people wouldn't be programming it themselves. If you mean directly fitting the chip in place of the old one - it wont work. It's the wrong physical size.
I want to remove the original BIOS and solder a programmed IC in its place, what do you mean with wrong physical size? BTW. Thanks for showing the PCB with the IC marking (TC534200F) visible, I've downloaded the datasheet and seems to be the same as 44 pin flash (except for the 2 + 2 extra pins).
No, it's not the same size. The original is smaller and has a smaller pitch. That's why no one does it like the Saturn etc. Ill try and dig the console out and take a pic with the flash over the original footprint.
In that case 29f400 works too. It was a long time ago and clearly I'm remembering it wrong. Maybe I was just looking for a way that was easily updateable, rather than having to lift the chip again. My bad!
