There are guides floating around the internet regarding how to fix the failing D pad buttons.

They involve breaking the button apart and cleaning the convex metal disc with a de-oxidizing substance (Bar Keepers friend has been mentioned). Alternatively, you can apparently harvest the disc from a Nintendo handheld (can't remember which one of the top of my head) but that still involves breaking apart a tiny switch and hoping that when you reassemble it all it keeps working. Something my eyesight fat fingers and patience wouldn't manage these days.

While this is something that could be done - grudgingly, a suggested alternative - which is far more sensible is to just replace the switches with functionally and dimensionally identical switches.
This would be the best possible solution - you'd get 4 perfect new switches that would last for another 20 years.

However - these suggested TSE 8 S Knitter switches are not apparently produced any more or in stock with any on-line supplier.
Does anyone with enough electronics manufacturing experience know of a suitable replacement to use in place of either the original switch or the substitute?

    Thanks, Mark.

i tried to find identical switches, searched all the part sites and compared. bought many that didnt work out. ruined a few pads in the process. i was the one that found you could use the discs from nds buttons for a desperate repair. in my notes was another possible solution,a pricey one. il look back into it in a few weeks.

The actual part name is a dome key
Shit load of mobile phones use them.. Measure the diameter of the dome.. I'll see what part is the same..

That's just the dome part, for the whole assembly.. Don't see why you would need to replace the bottom half its just two contacts in a plastic housing

How tall is the whole housing, you could just make a thick PCB with a SMD dome key

Some further discussion here from others trying to address the same problem, and a substitution of switches - but without a perfect match for dimensions, so it took some bodging
The second link has a lot of pictures to help explain what we're all trying to achieve.
