I never heard that one, but it doesn't surprise me with how they probably noticed they had a system with absolutely nothing on it.

Maybe this wasn't officially announced but just misinformation?

Surely they were cheaper than most VC games you can get nowadays :p

this is sort of old news. I think the emulator ended up as part of Dobotsu no Mori (animal crossing) which was later carried over to gamepak format.

Animal Crossing? Yes, it has a series of in-game items that look like NES consoles that also function like one (1 game per item).

    "famicom_emu.c"

    Awesome find Gilgamesh!

Ive always wondered how the emu system would have worked on the 64DD, would the games be stored on the RandnetDD disk?, or maybe just on the N64 RAM while you were online?...

AFAIK the user would download the game images to a special emulation DD disk (write them in the user area of course). No sales structure on how they'd make profit though, probably a la virtual console. Remember, when VC was first announced the retro games were rumored/implied to be free of charge, as a way to boost sales perhaps.

If someone could hack the emu out of Animal Forest it may be possible to run other games?

    Intriguing :)

There's already a NES emulator for N64 that is probably significantly more accurate/compatible: http://hcs64.com/neon64.html

But yeah, most likely they can be replaced with other games of the same size and mapper and will run somewhat. It might be more effort than it's worth though if the ROMs are compressed.

    Win Famicom Games

Animal Forest features a variety of Famicom (NES) games. You have to be lucky to get your hands on them though. One way to get them is to enter the monthly lottery at the Tanuki Store on the last day of the month. You get a lottery ticket for every major purchase you make at the store (stationary and plants don't count). Every five tickets let you play in the lottery once, so be sure to collect a bunch of them. Note that lottery tickets don't carry over to the next month. They're only good for the current month.

You can also enter the action replay codes to get the rare games. Those games are Ice Climber, Zelda, Mario Bros. and Super Mario Bros. Ice climber and Mario Bros. are e-reader only, the other two are 'Forbidden'.

You should empty your inventory first though.
