I'd like to be able to network my Xbox with my computer for when I move into my apartment next month. I'm going to be plugging it in using an ethernet cable, but I've had problems using this setup before. Also, I want to make it quieter. It is either the GPU fan or the rear fan, but it sounds like a jet engine. My 1.1 Xbox doesn't make hardly any noise, although I replaced the rear fan with an 80mm. It's been like that for awhile, and I don't remember if it made as much noise. I have an 8GB hard drive with no reason (or money ) to buy a bigger one. The idea is to be able to pull everything from my computer, especially since everything I'd use is already up here anyway. I'm not going to be setting it up for a few weeks, but I'd like suggestions.
If your going direct from the PC to xbox youll need a crossed network cable, and then fiddle with the network settings to get them talking, but the easiest way is get a cheap router, and then set the xbox to DHCP, stick all your media you want to stream in a network shared folder and its done! as for making it quiter, stick a 80mm fan on it as you said (makes a world of differeence) and then set the fan speed through xbmc to 20 or 30%, virtually silent and more than enough airflow to keep it cool, also, if you use a bigger fan then you can disconnect the gpu fan, or just give it a damned good clean and grease the bearings in it or stick a bigger heatsink on the gpu hope that helps DD
Did three mods to silence my v1.0 xbox - replaced the v1.0 GPU heatsink+fan with a v1.1 GPU heatsink - replaced the rear fan with a 80mm low-noise PAPST fan - replaced the HD with a low-noise, 5400 rpm, HD...
Thanks for the advice guys. One thing I forgot to ask is if it is feasible to run movies (encoded with DivX/Xvid if it makes a difference) over a network. I assume it is since XBMC obviously supports it. The reason I'm asking is because I have my main Xbox (200gig hard drive, tons of movies/games/etc) and my second one (softmodded but otherwise stock). The apartment I'm moving into has a living room which other people will be using, so I'm not sure which Xbox I should use for each room. I don't want people messing with the stuff I have on my original Xbox, but I also can't really think of a way to get a network connection to the other without having cables going everywhere. Wireless would be an option if I had more money and felt like soldering a bunch of shit everywhere, but I don't and I don't, so there's that At any rate I have another two weeks to think about it before I move in. I'm going to start looking at alternative GPU fans. Is there any way I could buy something off of Newegg and screw it on there instead of removing something from another Xbox (something like a 30mm/40mm)? I know about the case fans... my only problem there is locating my Dremel.
Yes, you can stream over a network with XBMC. If you have a X360, just use that instead. That can handle decoding HD quality files which the original Xbox struggles with CPU wise. If not, then mod the box and put XBMC on it. -hl718
^Already covered, and I don't have a 360. It doesn't matter because I don't have a television capable of displaying HD in proper resolution, anyway. Both of my Xboxes are already modded. Thanks though.
Streaming over the netowkrworks just fine for mdeia playback, i do this pretty much everyday and have never encountered any lag or playback issues i should think any heatsink would do to replace the gpu one, but if you do put a bigger fan in that should give enough airflow to keep the existing one cool, just unplug the gpu fan, clean both the heatsinks and youll be ok with it
How difficult is it to pull off the GPU heatsink without damaging the motherboard? I usually don't mess around with the Xbox's motherboard. If it's easy enough to do then I would rather just buy a better one. Edit: I'm guessing one of these would work? http://secure.llamma.com/catalog/product_info.php?cPath=64_52&products_id=115
I would say it's very easy. Just make sure you buy a v1.1 GPU heatsink or something equal/better, and not another v1.0 heatsink.... You know this is for the MCPX and not the GPU, right? Some heat transfer from the MCPX to the surrounding air doesn't hurt, but is not strictly needed either....
Ok, thanks for clearing that up for me. Is there just a generic heatsink I could order (like on Newegg, for instance)? I looked on eBay and there are no 1.1 heatsinks, and Llamma doesn't carry them either. I really don't want to have to sign up for some generic console modification site just to order one part.
I know that at least with the xbox 360 you can put it inside of a computer case, you may be able to do it with the old xbox. You can possibly remove the fan making it loud, and replace it with a new type of cooling inside a PC case. Shown here: http://forums.xbox-scene.com/index.php?showtopic=635645. Its possible.
Right, well, it's already been established I don't own (nor am I looking to own) an Xbox 360. I'm not trying to move the motherboard at the moment, and especially not into a bigger case. I've already replaced the rear fan. I still need to find an alternative to the GPU heatsink. I can't find any 1.1 heatsinks available for order, so is there something else I could use?
i have a tonne of old motherboard i can take the gpu fan off for you, pay for shipping and its yours!
That would be great, but how much do you think shipping would be, since you're in England (?) and I'm in the states? And I need a 1.1+ heatsink. A fan is not necessary and is in fact what I'm trying to do away with.
