jccochez>I opened my yaroze once more, disconnected the lens/motor and the controller port ribbons, and it worked, so i reconnected all and it still worked!
Sometimes i feel dumb, it took 3 months for me to figure out that the lens ribbon was badly inserted...so thank you all for your help...

You can use it as a regular ps1 with no regional lock-out but you can't use the yaroze with the sdk without the dongle, the boot disc doesn't detect it and stops before the console and the computer are connected...
I wonder if the supposedly cracked version of the yaroze boot disc works without the dongle, i'll test it on the debug ps1...

    jcchoez, PM sent!

Yeah - using a card in the parallel port is a great idea. I'm sure you can get a used one for cheap off fleabay.

FYI - My PAL PSX consoles play NTSC games in NTSC and PAL games in PAL too. The other advantage of the PAL PlayStation is that it will run on 110v or 220v without the use of any transformers.

For once us Europeans got something good!

P.S There's a cracked Yaroze disc floating round - cool, although what's wrong with using the access card? For people who have lost it I guess...? Cool.

Yeah, the SCPH-700x and later models do that perfectly. They are based on the H7240A video encoder (aka Sony CXA2106R). You can also mod these consoles to always output the colorburst at the PAL chroma subcarrier at 4.43 MHz by connecting pin 13 to ground, or at the NTSC subcarrier at 3.58 MHz by connecting pin 13 to +3.3V. Without a mod this is done automatically by the GPU (pin 157) on these models.

The pre-SCPH-700x consoles, all DTL-H1x0x Debugging Stations, the SCPH-5903 VCD model and the DTL-H300x Yaroze all have the Sony CXA 1645M video encoder. The units also switch beetween PAL and NTSC internally, but have a problem with the colorburst being sent through a band pass filter to eliminiate higher harmonic components. An NTSC unit therefore filters out the PAL colorburst and vice versa, and the result is a b/w picture for both the composite and s-video outputs. You need to mod these consoles using an external crystal to set the chroma subcarrier to a fixed frequecy which matches the band pass filter. OR simply use RGB which always work...

    Phew..

My PSX consoles are a SCPH-5502 and PSX debugger (DTL-H1202). I have a faithful Yaroze too which is also fine.

I always use RGB which is probably why they work, although in the olden days I used my chipped SCPH-5502 using a NTSC to PAL converter. That was connected to my PAL telly using an aerial cable. That played NTSC fine. I used to get just a black and white scrolling picture otherwise. But it was a pretty old TV.

    Now-a-days most are multi compatible.

All models are fine if you use RGB. But the chroma subcarrier is filtered out in the composite and s-video signal for NTSC in a SCPH-5502 and DTL-H1202.

Those so-called NTSC to PAL converters for the Playstation are not NTSC to PAL converts ;-) They are RGB to PAL converters. If you look inside one you will find a CXA 1645M or similar RGB-to-video encoder. A standard NTSC-to-PAL converter will not work on models prior to the SCPH-700x, because there is no chroma signal to convert.
