Electronic Arts has announced that it has collaborated with energy company BP in creating the latest version of the SimCity game franchise. The latest version called SimCity Socities is a reflection of what EA and BP describe as a more nuanced power generation and pollution simulation and shows the trade-offs between electric power, cost, power, output and pollution.

Guess I am not buying the new sim city.

that isn't really Sim City - more like Sim Eco-Friendly or something. I am a big fan of Sim City btw, but the last good sim city (on the PC) was Sim City 3000.

4 was lacking in most respect in my veiw compared to 3000 and it seems that the next installment will suck hairy donkey balls.

    It's still corporate propaganda.

Manage the citizens of CocaCola City, using your powers as the BP friendly energy man(tm)!

Prepare to have fun as you use the louis vuitton styled interface to
build fashion stores where you can have runway shows using your
    favorite MTV tracks !

well in terms of commercial reality, this means an extra income source for EA - through in-game advertisment. We all knew it was comming sooner or later :(

To be honest I kind of like ads in games if they are done the right way. It can make the game world seem more realistic. The trick is that the developers need to keep it in the background of the game. When they start collaborating with the advertisers (like this case) is when I start to worry.

If done in the right way then I don't mind. A good example of what I mean would be the Coca-Cola machines in Shenmue. Having little things like that enhances the reality of the game world, had little intrusion on playing the game, and made Sega a few bucks in the process. Unless you are a Pepsi man I don't see much downside in something like that.

Now if I had to watch a Coke ad every 3rd time I turned on the game or constantly ran into people in the game raving about Coke... That would be a different story.

Does the game feature eco warriors who use the BP petrol stations to make molotov cocktails to chuck at Starbucks, Nike, Gap and Apple stores?

    1) EA doesn't need the extra income.

    2) We should not be fatalistic about advertising in games, assuming that it's inevitable. Gamers have to complain, protest, and refuse to buy games loaded with advertising!

i dont' mind ads if they're done the right way. Like if I'm in a city and I see a billboard for Verizon or something, keeps it realistic. If I'm playing Halo and I see an ad for a 2008 SUV, thats... not quite teh same.

if they throw ads in games, they should take some dollars off the asking price. Having the Burger King as your manager in Fight Night Round 3 was laughable enough, but him specializing in giving you heart attribute points of all things is even funnier.

What's the benefit to the consumer for having this shit in our games if we still pay full price for them.

that's not how it works. Has cable TV prices gone down? no.

The companies get more money, which in turn would hopefully go towards game development.

doesn't need? The principle of Capitalism dictates more income dynamically, there's no cap limit to income, so you're wrong I m afraid. You don't have to "need" to make money.

Ad's should stay away from games. I don't mind a Coca Cola Vending Machine here and there, but I fear it's not going to stay like this, and adverts are getting more and more into the games.

Killing for Jesus. 50 Cent is such a fucking tool.

I agree with others in that in-game advertising can make the game more immersive so long as it's subtle. I really don't see the need for it in SimCity, though, and EA already has too much money for their own good.

How many franchises were present in Crazy Taxi, it was pure madness!!!

Games have to be eco-friendly these days, just be greatful you didnt have to find a bin for Ryo`s cans in Shenmue.
