Well, I don't blame Nintendo for people's stupidity and consumerism. Honestly, the kind of people who would re-buy a system that they already own just because it has a slightly better screen are such a miniscule part of Nintendo's market that I doubt it even comes into their consideration. From what I've heard, this new backlit screen is just cheaper for Nintendo to get these days since it's more widely manufactured, so their putting it in the SP is just the most cost-effective thing to do. That makes sense and explains why it was totally unannounced and why there's not even word of it on their site. ...word is bondage...
This is very interesting although the shots at IGN are very misleading. I have an SP which I use frequently and mine is not as dime as there side by side comparison model. The original SP unit that I own is front-lit (if you tilt the top of the unit towards you, you can see the illuminator unit). I still can't see all the hype in the Micro; I don't need to 'bling out' my handheld and a headphone jack is not worth another $20. ^_^_^
But isn't the GB Micro's screen slightly smaller than the stock one that ships on the SP? Is it hugely noticeable?
That would be a product of a CCD camera and their choice of exposure settings/shutter speeds to try and emphasise the brightness difference. They either used a fast shutter speed or a dark room when taking those pictures.
Looks like the new/improved model has already hit stores. My local Wal-Mart has both the Platinum Blue and Gray models in stock. Box does indeed indicate the "Brighter Screen" verbiage.
I sure wish my NES SP was backlit... but I already own too many GBAs to warrant buying a new one... plus my recent DS and PSP purchases...
