    I was thinking....

Isn't it about time to rename "video games?" I was reading yet another article which had to add in this type of phrase: The average video gamer is 3X years old, has been playing for X number of years, so they aren't just for kids anymore.

Is there a more prefessional word or description to use? The term "video games" pretty much makes one think of kids playing Nintendo. Nowadays when you see it in the media they always have to add in a disclaimer like the above.

So, if you could rename the term "video games," what would you choose? Something like the "Digital Entertainment Industry"? Is there one term that could include a reference to hardware as well?

"Video games" as a moniker is no different than "movies" for moving pictures.

Why should it be in English? It were be better if it were Japanese, or maybe a combination of Japanese and English.

If I could change videogames name, probably my choice would be TV games or TV enterteinment. It would be a bit more accurate since the term "video games" is mostly applied to console gaming, PC games are mostly called like PC games or computer games...

My other choice woud be calling them porn, it would not have any sense but you would see some weird results in a matter of weeks

For some reason, the term "Video Games" has always annoyed me. I usually just call them games, but that sounds hokey too. I dunno.

Video games is the perfect terminology. I don't see why it should change. It is up to the games industry to change peoples perceptions and I don't think changing the name would help at all.

I consider "video games" as an almost perfect description of what they are. I like the proposition of combining English and Japanese though. Maybe also French, German, Chinese and Spanish too to make it complete :D

"Bildschirm Juego avec Chi inside desu yo", or just: Bijua Cideyo.

That first one just rolls right off the tongue.. Imagine news anchors trying to use that term.

I don't really think the term will change.

My dad called them "Baby toys" once though. He also didn't understand why in 04' all the people in our town went to Wal-Mart for Halo 2. And one time VH1 did a "I love the 90s" segment and on the MK segment, some dude said "Ugh, Mortal Kombat, back then it was like the cry of the retard "MUST PLAY VIDEO GAME"" and my dad looked at me after he said that and smiled widely.

Anyways, if the term ever changed it would probably be something like Computer entertainment or Interactive Electronic Entertainment or something.

What's wrong with calling them video games? That's part of the heritage. Why must we modernize everything?

They are games using a video system. Just like audio books are exactly that. Or do you think they should be called something different, too?

And this would lead to poncy job titles, just like how bin men are now "refuse collectors". What's it going to be? Video game programmers are to become "digital multimedia entertainment coding engineers"??!?! JUST SAY IT LIKE IT IS!!!

I don't think it's the words we need to change, it's the perception in people's heads....and that cannot easily be changed.

People's perception is shaped by the marketing by games companies.....All the companies create the image of young people dominating(?) the video gaming scene. Perhaps Nintendo do it more than any - but if they don't someone else would.

It's possible to change perceptions but it's probably the games companies who have the ability to change perceptions.
