Contra is a game people consider difficult, you jump and shoot in a similar way, so it's a Contra game by that thinking. While I agree the character looks somewhat like MegaMan, the game doesn't play like MegaMan at all. Just because there may be some aspects that remind you of it, it's still a LARGE leap to say it's like MegaMan. It's a great original game for sure. But I don't think anyone should lump it with MegaMan. It's good enough to stand on its own.
But now you're adding things. You know what my point was, the game isn't Mega Man. It can stand on it's own as a platforming game.
If I remember correctly, then one of his main inspirations to that game is I Wanna Be The Guy game. Which then again has been inspired by so many old school and cool platformers, but the main ingredient is that the game is bloody hard.
