Personally i'd go for the athlon 64, it's cheaper then the P4 and runs games and multimedia a bit faster then it's same speed P4 compettitor.

Also for a videocard i'd recommend an ati radeon 9800 series as their are great value for money compared to geforce cards of the same price class.

I agree with Silverbolt. The machine I just bought is an AMD64 and has a Radeon 9800 :smt023

Runs alot better than P4 systems I've used :)

Athlon 64. Faster, Cheaper, And when it finally comes around, compatible with 64bit apps.

Get one of those £299 cheapo Dell's and stick a half decent graphics card in there, by the time any PC arrives its out of date.

Unless you want to be an anal retentive and run Doom 3 in 1800x1200 with 4xAA and all that shit, don't spend a lot. It's worth waiting until the original 64bit processor prices drop when the next versions arrive.

Any socket 754 athlon64 for the first case, It looks like the fastest is the 3700+ here: http://www.ebuyer.com/customer/prod...2hvd19wcm9kdWN0X292ZXJ2aWV3&product_uid=63119
For 2nd case it will take any socket 939 athlon 64, i think the fastest is this: http://www.ebuyer.com/customer/prod...2hvd19wcm9kdWN0X292ZXJ2aWV3&product_uid=72523. I cant say i'd want to spend Almost £600 on a processor though, go for one that is a few models down, as it won't be much slower but will be much cheaper.
The 2nd one i believe will be more future-proof, as i think AMD are slowly phasing out socket 754 as used in the 1st case. Not certain on that though.

On another note watch out for the power supply in that case, 240watts is not much, and could cause problems in the future. I had problems with my system which had a 300w power supply and was of lower specs than yours

Personally, I am a P4 fanboy and If you wanted the fastest pC money can buy and you have top dollar to pay for it, then P4 all the waaay baby!

If you want good performance but more bang per buck, go for an AMD based system. They perform only a few % less than a P4 however they are significantly cheaper therefore are great value for money.

I personally have gone the high end route before, spent pretty much every penny i had and then some on building a kickass PC only to have a few months later a new chip released and the value of my rig drop significantly. I would advise you to avoid going for the high end route unless you regularly have a fat wad of cash in your wallet to play with.

1 method which works well for those of us who are not laoded is to look at the manufacturers high end flagship chip, then buy the processor which is 2 models down. usually they are of similar speed however they are significantly cheaper and don't suffer as bad from depreciation.

Another fact to consider is what you want it for. If you're a hardcore gamer you will need some beefy power aswell as a fast hard drive and a badass gfx card - however if it's just for browsing then you should be looking at a much smaller model.

1 thing i would advise against using ina shuttle is a fast processor, especially an AMD as they get notoriously hot and all that heat in such a small space with bugger all ventilation does cause problems.
