New PS2 Tool owner, have some questions...

I just got a DTL-T10000H for cheap. It's a clean unit, but comes with no software. It hasn't arrived yet, so I'll post most when I know more, but I'm wondering what exactly I'll be able to do without the disks that usually come with this thing.

I'm sure I can use the PS2 debug end, but will the linux part be functional?

Post any questions you have, but a little bit of searching can't help anyway, you're not the first new Tool owner, and you're not going to be the last I'm sure.
Try searching for all the threads with "Tool" in the title, you'll surely find some valuable informations

And take a picture or two of your Tool when it arrives, so we can see how clean it is

Btw, what is a typical price to pay for one of these things? I think I did very well, but not 100% sure.

 

I've seen a fair amount of variation with respect to pricing on these things, probably because folks may be prepared to pay a premium for buying from known vendors/nearby sources (because they weigh a ton, thus are costly to ship & prone to damage in shipping). $400 is the lowest I've seen recently, but since I've seen shipping range from $15 to well over $100 (overseas), that can be a significant factor in the overall price as well.

 

So $300 was good then?

 

Depends on what the shipping cost & what condition the unit arrives in, but I'd certainly be pretty happy with getting one at $300.

Here are the pics! I just got it in the mail today.

 

I hooked up the monitor to it and put a power chord to the dev unit, and turned it on. VERY pretty green and blue lights . DVD tray works great (one thing I heard breaks a lot).

However, I'm not getting a signal. My monitor says something like it can't display it or something. I know there's another VGA port under some plate, but i didnt see where that could be. Ah well, I'll fool around with it later.

The VGA port of the PC/Linux side is located on the PCI card's slot bracket, just remove the metal plates above and below the network connector. You'll find a VGA and PS/2 keyboard port there; newer versions of the card (PCI-815VE) also have a PS/2 mouse port, but you won't need that for the command line tools installed on the unit.

I just noticed your TOOL has the DTL-H10010 (PCMCIA) card installed (left of the Linux PCI card). The network connector on the small cable comming out of that card is for the PlayStation 2 side of the TOOL, not for the Linux side. That means, if you want PS2 games running on the TOOL to access the network, you'll have to connect to that PCMCIA card. However, if you want to connect your TOOL to a development PC (for example, to run applications from Sony's SDK or ProDG), you'll have to use the network port on the PCI card.

 

Ah ok, that strangely makes perfect sense :110:. I'll take those brackets off tonight, and see if I see all that you say is there. I'm assuming that once I plug the monitor into the hidden VGA port, I'll get some sort of display, and that if I use my PS2 chords to plug into the PS2 side of it, the Playstation 2 side of it will come up on my TV just like a regular PS2?
