Looking at all of the new PSP screens such as Dynasty Warriors, Minna no Golf and the various others such as MGS acid, it seems as though we have maybe misjudged the power of the machine. It is definetly not as powerful as the PS2 in either poly count or texturing and don't give me this is early software as I am aware of that. But even at this stage in a Ps2 development before the console was released, the textures were far more detailed and the poly count significantly higher. It seems it was the press who hyped the ps2 thing as Kutaragi has said in every interview that he puts it inbetween psone and ps2 in terms of power. The screen res is gorgeous for a handheld and it is significantly more powerful than the DS(though it only has one screen to process for) but we are kidding ourselves to believe it is a portable PS2.It's nowhere near the dreamcast either. http://www.the-magicbox.com/0410/game041029f.shtml
Well ive always known this, however i think its the gt4 port that got everyone thinking its power is as great as the ps2.
We have yet to see this running in action on hardware, don't get me wrong I am a great PSP fan and will be buying one, it's just I don't think it is as powerful as I first thought it was.Had another look at some new Mario stuff on the DS today and that looks absolutely mint, have yet to see anything with it's charm on the psp yet, but i am sure it will come.I am looking forward to MGS acid though, it looks really strategic and perfect for portable gaming.I think once Kojima finishes the fnishing touches on MGS 3 and MGS 3 substance/integral he will make a fully fledged MGS for the PSP unless he shocks us all and makes it for the DS but I can't see that happening.Kojima seems to have fallen in love with the PS brand.I thought he may have done another MGS for the cube but no.
It will look great on the small screen. It will be powerful enough to do what it's meant to i'm sure.
Sad thing is, Kojima didn't even do Twin Snakes - it was farmed out to Silicon Knights. They didn't do a bad job, per se, but it just didn't have the MGS feel to it at times, despite being a remake of the first one. It is truely sad that 'cube owners may get no more MGS action..
that's exactly what i whanted to post: dynasty warriors screens... to say the truth, it look really awful compared to what was hyped. it look like a ps with a better resolution and texture, and they said it was like a portable ps2.... :\ let's compare that. ps(one) dynasty warrior PSP dynasty warrior ps2 dynasty warrior 2(one of the first ps2 tittle.) ps2 dynasty warrior 3
not a HUGE sony fan but it's still gorgeous for a portable!! I've had a hard time loving a portable since the turbo express (pcengine gt) but this ones got me excited!
It looks great but not PS2 like, It doesnt have a lot of jaggies, thats why it isnt as powerful as the PS2 :smt043 . Anyway, its more like the PSX but with bilinear filtering to smooth out the textures.
Doesn't look that bad for me. Other than the fact that it's not 2D. How well do you think this machine would handle sprite based games? ... if we see any.... :smt009
Mind you, a good majority of these games are being brought out quickly to aid with the PSP launch. Sure, the enviroments arn't the best, but the character models are pretty good. I dare say we won't see any graphicly impressive games until companies have time to actualy sit down and work on them.
Our team set its goals low at the very beginning... mainly because no body knew the TRUE specs of the machine when development began.. we were using software emulators.. So aiming slightly lower would ensure a guaranteed frame rate/performance when hardware arrived.. rather than setting golas high, and having to 'cut down' later on.. wasting time effort and release dates. But since we have been able to get to grips with the machine we have realised that its a very nice bit of kit indeed. We ported on of our past PS2 products to it fairly easily (as a test).. using same models etc.. textures were resized down mainly because on the PSPs screen, a Hires texture is wasted.. so shrink it down and save much needed ram for other things... but the game still looks the same. The screen shots are more... devkit 'dumps' so yeah its what its running.. but looks better on the actual psp screen. Take a screen dump in a GBA emulator and compare it to a game running on the GBA! the dump will always look blocky and nasty! 1st batch of software is probably made very causiously.. because the games were started BEFORE the hardware arrived... as was ours.!
