Not sure if this has been posted but been reading about the 3rd DS that's going to be released and i think it looks like its going to have some pretty good additions and could be quite good.

Its too bad that it will be released in japan 1st and then everywhere else in 09 as looking at getting a ds-lite soon but i am not going to wait till 09 for this over a standard ds-lite.

With those spec, that look more like a new gen system than a third generation of DS. If that is the case I'm wandering how backward compatibility will be (GBA/DS)

Still doubtful that they will remove the gba slot, nintendo are usually good in keeping backwards compatability with at least a generation behind.

If they lost the slot quite a few ds games would be effected as well as the internet browser.

I think they would keep backwards compatibility since alot of people who buy a DS will have GBA games and if they don't support GBA games they will lose alot of sales to the lite because of this.

I like the feautures in this but i have thought do i need a camera when i have one on my phone and do i need to be able to listen to music when i can on my phone and i have a Ipod shuffle and the answer those is no. so rather than waiting for one i would/am going for a ds-lite.

This still sounds like an upgrade then a new system. There would be no way they are launching a brand new handheld this year with a showing at TGS (which is what this sounds like it will amount to).

It just sounds like a revised DS with a few extras under the hood. Yet I got to say, why the **** would anybody want a new ds that just adds photos & music playback when nintendo always goes with the cheapest crap it can find (which ends up in shitty results). Also unless they revise the cpu specs, the DS specs are not really going to provide enough power to support a wide range of audio specs.

If you really needed all that crap in a handheld anyways might as well just own an iphone/itouch or PSP. Have a DS for it's own gaming.

Only things that sound of any interest is posible extension to wii<>ds communications.

Why, both systems are selling well and making a profit. Why go through the first 1-2 year life cycle this soon when there is no need?

First year cycle is god awful on any system (hw expenses, poor software support, etc).

I would think that the camera would be used more for games and not for pictures. Something like the EyeToy is what I was figuring.

I would really like the bigger screens however if this really is just a hardware refresh I won't be purchasing it.

This is why I generally stay behind one generation of consoles.

This trend of re-releasing a system over and over again is the ultimate money making scheme. I understand they're making it better, and thats great, but it absolutely screws over anyone who invested money in previous model machine.

Not so true with consoles, lots of platforms never receive a significant upgrade, and those that do are often cheapened in some way by it. With handhelds, though, sure. The most blatant to my mind is the GBA to GBA SP update. It's hard to see that as anything other than Nintendo abusing their market position to enforce a further hardware purchase at a later date.

yeah, and the GBA Micro was extremely bad. So I am quite happy with GBA SP, but well I didn´t get the original GBA.

What was "extremely bad" about the Micro? I don't own one but know plenty of people who do, and a lot of them love it.

I love hearing people bitch about the hardware updates and such. The DS lite is fine as it is, I'll say that... but if Nintendo wants to release something else to capitalize on the success of the DS, then I welcome it. Nintendo would be foolish to sell only the new model --- previous experience has dictated that not everything fresh gets adopted. (Refer to GBA micro, although even Nintendo's George Harrison admitted that the GBAm was meant to occupy a segment of the market for people who had to have the latest and smallest, but both that and the GBA SP would still sell concurrently. It was later shown that the GBAm tanked and the GBA SP recouped it's former shelf allotment at stores before it had to give some up to the other one.)

Not everyone is going to dump their DS lites for this new model. It's just to attract new potential customers and even get others to upgrade from their existing models. You'll still be able to play the same darn games on the thing. Nintendo has been firm in taking a gaming-only stance, but it seems more willing to break that policy now. Big freakin' whoop... but let the people who want to enjoy the new features do so.
(There are a mass of casuals out there who would love to have a DS that plays music and takes photos as well...)

I doubt they'll release the next generation of handhelds before the successor to Wii is being launched. Historically, Ninty has had a stationary - portable connection between all their major consoles, Wii-DS, GC-GBA, N64-GBC, and even a quite primitive connection between the original GB and SNES. The life cycles of the portable machines are more or less the same as their stationary counterpart. And, as we all know, Wii will stay for some time.

I wasn't aware that they want to release this THIS year. The DS' specs are too low to be of any use compared to the PSP (remote play kicks ass too) - and that's comming from a nintendo fan.

I don't know about some people, but I found the Micro to be just fine. Small enough to take with you everywhere, same power as it's big brother.

Hardly a new system, but the larger screens are a welcome upgrade.. and thanks to flashcards music playback has been there for ages. The cam is most likely for Eyetoy-like games specific to the new model, fair game.
The rule of thumb with handhelds is this: Wait at least for the first hardware revision before committing a purchase!
