Ben is definitey one cool frood who knows where his towel is. Any of you guys mess around with this kind of console hacking before? I tried to make a portable Colecovison without much success. Couldn't get the screen to work. Then again, I can't tell my ass from a hole in the ground when it comes to electronics.
I'm certain I've seen pirate versions of Megadrive hardware... in VCD players and pirat-made consoles. Surely there's some well shrunk megadrive mobo out there somewhere. I've not heard of pirate SNES hardware though.
I just scored a game gear for $2.95. I'm going to try and make my own console hack. Which one? I suppose I could just follow Ben's directions for the 2600, but honestly I don't like 2600 games very much. What classic console would you guys like portableized, Snes? Intellivision? Colecovision?
You should make something that Ben should have made years ago. Why make all these "Classic" systems handheld when you can make a real classic system handheld. Make yourself a PC Engine !!! OK, this has already been done but with a screen the size of a stamp :smt024 Why not make one with a much bigger screen. Would be the coolest homebrew hand held bar the PlayStation one that Ben made. If the idea of a PC Engine doesn't take your fancy then why not make a hand held N64. That system has a small board that I'm sure you could chop down even smaller. Yakumo
Actaully, N64 sounds like a good idea. I even remeber seeing a website somewhere with easily illustraged step-by-step instructions (which is what I'll need if I attempt to do this.) I already have a Turbo Express, and am quite happy with it.
Doesnt the N64 draw quite a lot of power? I remember it being 20W or something, which is twice as much as the PSone or NES...
I saw a page once with precise instructions on how to chop down an N64 board and controller so it would be portablized (admittiedly the final product was still a foot across, but what the hell.) Can't find the link but I think it was on Ben's forums actually. Didn't have anything about making an N64 run off batteries, but I suppose it can't be that hard. Anybody have any suggetions on where I should research how to do this?
Maybe one of those 'cube or PSOne portable batteries could be chopped up. I imagine they would be able to power an N64 for a while.
