Before rebuilding did it work on that same tv? did you try other ps2 cable? different type of cable? compsit/rgb etc? other scart port?

RF? i don't think thats an option but ok, sounds weird.. are you sure you fitted all cables inside the unit back in properly? double check the connections in the video out port of the ps2 side, maybe move the cable a bit to see if something shows up..
otherwise I think you might have busted something.

I remember having simular issues with one of my tool back in the days, the network screen would not always show up, not sure why.
but when starting a game manually on command line it would display fine on tv using the composit cables.
so what you are saying is that when you start a game you hear the sound of the game but it doesn't display anything? hmm not sure what is going wrong there tbh.

Some ideas in no particular order:

Did you check your monitor and cable with a retail PS2?

There are two VGA ports on the backside of the TOOL. The one on the side panel, near the Multi A/V port, outputs signals at TV timing which most modern VGA monitors cannot display. Do not connect anything to this one; according to the manual, this can screw up the TOOL if Multi A/V is used as well.
To get the output of the PC/Linux side, you need to use the second hidden VGA port (on the leftmost PCI slot bracket; unscrew the small metal cover there).

How are the DIP switches set on the back of unit (above the PS2 VGA and Multi A/V ports)? The default settings from left to right (1 to 8) are DOWN, UP, DOWN, DOWN, UP, DOWN, UP, UP. If you want to use PAL instead of NTSC by default, set 5 to DOWN instead. This does only affect the network information screen, though, not any games. These set their preferred display resolution on startup, regardless of the DIP setting.

There's a small hatch on the front of the left side panel, below the CD/DVD drive door. The switches inside should be set to DVD and TOOL.

If all of this doesn't help, have a look into the Multi A/V port on the backside. Are the pins inside damaged? Don't be surprised if some of them are missing; the connector isn't fully populated ;-).

If you have access to an oscilloscope (with TV triggering), you might also want to have a look at the composite signal itself. If there is no signal at all, either the cable, connector or some part of the video encoder circuit is broken. If there is a sync signal but otherwise black image, there might be a broken trace between the graphics chip and video encoder (or video encoder and crystal/sync generator).

my tool is connected the the vga port behind the metal place and output on the linux side fine. The dip switches are set fine found the right settings in the parris's repair guide. the small hatch on the front are set to the right settings dvd and tool. by the look of things I am getting a sync signal because the television is reacting to me turning the tool on in the first place because I get a black screen. and the scart cable is fine just tryed it on my test!

I had some issues with some svideo and guncon breakout cables not giving video intermittantly unless really wiggled around... rca seems far less finnicky for initial testing- i'd try a straight rca set first off.. if you've got sound, then it soulds more like the cable's not shorting right... or as suggested- it's in ntsc mode and your tvs are all pal- also, if you have a crt around that can display 15khz, connect it to the vga port on the ps2 board- it'll also work.

I am starting to think it is not ntsc mode it is probably the playstation board I have used three diffrent televisions and three diffrent cables with no success still the same problem. this is were it becomes a problem because with some of the simpler consoles/hardware I'm fine fixing it but the tools a complicated beast of a machine.

On retail units, bad RDRAM may cause black screen. If you can, figure out how to check the KTTY (EE SIO) and see the boot messages for the PS2 side there...

On the PS2 side, when you boot the system does the screen flash several times whilst booting? First thing is, if so that is perfectly normal. You want to establish that you are still getting VGA output from the main motherboard. If it flashes it should mean the GPU is ok.

I don't think it'll be the TV as you've found the dips and you can go from PAL / NTSC and your TV would accept one or the other depending on where you are in the World.

Assuming it's nothing silly like a damaged cable, or something straight forward that you've not done (such as check dips, which we know you have) then I would look at the unit itself. Remember there are internal dips, depending on how much work and how far you investigated within the system, I would check those (against the internal dip images found in the guide).

How far did you strip the unit down? If you are confident enough, go back in and have a look.

    1) Remove the panel marked "Tool" and take the metal side panel off.

    2) Plug everything in and try to boot up the system as normal.

    3) Check the warning LEDs in the very bottom of the LINUX backbone. If they are all showing green then the system believes it's operating properly. If not, and you have a red light then it's a question of establishing which one it is (they are marked). That would be my starting point.

The only thing I would be worried about is the GPU having died. I'd have thought it unlikely, but there is a problem I discovered in taking these things apart in that once the PSU has been removed, or you strip a unit RIGHT down to it's last components then you need to use cable ties for all the cabling!

I should revise the guide! One cable is fairly long, slack and it dangles just above the CPU and GPU fans behind the DVDrom, so you don't really notice it. I have seen it physically stop a GPU fan, which would kill the thing.

Check for that, but don't panic! This has happened on a couple of units on here and people have managed to finally get things up and running. Port and UJ (amongst others) are excellent help!

Sadly I no longer have a unit or access to one so I can't really be of much help, but I do hope you get this beast running. Also, remember that a few members have had PS2 Tools that showed NO signs of life and brought them back from the dead, so don't give up!

Sorry it took so long to get back! I am Planning to to strip it down again over the next week and post some pictures. I'm confident that the unit thinks it is working propally the LEDs that should be showing green are.

last time I stripped it down I took it apart completely to take a look at he boards and to fix problems that may have happened in postage as we know these thing don't like parcel force!

Get back to you later in the week thank for all the advice.

PS I'll Take some pictures of my collection and post on the my collections part of the forum.

Good luck! Hopefully it's something simple, and no, the PS2 Tool detests being posted. It's a very fragile unit.

    Playstation Tool DTL-T10000 Board Pictures

These are the pictures of the damage on the linux backbone that I have been asked to post.

Is it possable the damage like this might stop the playstation part of my tool from showing on the television?

I am trying to find a replacment for the linux backbone which is looking promising that Vertrex-rox might have a spare.

VGA output on main board Just incase this might be the problem?
