Well i took the plunge today. For my hard earned £883 i got a goodmans (its some tv that gets rebadged for 3 others though) 42" LCD 1080p 6.5ms panel. After spending time loooking at the sony, samsung and sharp 720p and 1080i/p offerings i decided that at this price (compared to £1500) for the others this was the best choice. Seeing as its the only one to come with vga, dvi, HDMI, component and a few others. (it should do 1:1 pixel mapping on all imputs as well! Though not 100% sure i hear theres some overscan on component about 2/3%) Lacks freeview but oh well i have cable. Now cant wait till this tv gets delivered on tues for some 1080p xbox gaming!!! Was just reading engadget.... why oh why dont we get bargain sets like america! 46" dlp for like £780! Looks amazing too! http://www.engadget.com/2006/11/29/samsung-hl-s4676s-slimdlp-hands-on/
Here, bargain = cheap crap in my opinion. We have been looking for a decent replacement set for a while now, but my requirements pretty much exclude 90% of the market. Why is it so hard to find a non-DLP, 55"+, 1080p set? Most of the sub $1500 TV's here are DLP and 720p max.
It's harder because making a 1080p plasma is difficult and expensive, and of course any large lcd is expensive, 1080p more so. I purchased a 1080p samsung, 40inch lcd a couple weeks ago, and the thing is amazing
