Hello, everyone! Here's another nice surprise from Super Fighter Team: The game can be downloaded from here - http://www.sangofighter.com/download.htm Please give it a try and enjoy! Thanks for your attention and interest. Have a nice day.
Neat! Is the link to download the new version or the old one? It's kind of confusing because it also has "An updated version of Sango Fighter for use with Windows, Linux and Mac OS is currently in development...". In addition, where can you get the original releases? That is, the original English, and Chinese versions?
... Thank you. I hope you enjoy it. The full list of changes is documented on the following page - http://www.sangofighter.com/history.htm The full story of Sango Fighter's development, release, legal squabblings and more is documented in a detailed article that I wrote - Super Fighter vs. Sango Fighter: Chinese War Ends In America The download link is, of course, for the newly updated version. What the download page said was still technically correct, as we will eventually bundle the DOSBox emulator along with the game, so that people using Windows, Linux and Mac OS can experience it quickly and easily. However I have rewritten the text to be more clear. Thanks for pointing that out. We're no longer hosting them.
Ah, so I guess this is a case of "don't throw out your old disks!" In regards to the article you posted, what parts of the Panda catalog does Super Fighter own? I assume one unmentioned IP is Panda Dodgeball? UPDATE: So when will Super Fighter release the foot soldier code? Do you obtain it as a in-game reward, will it be released over time, or do we just reverse the EXE for it? (^_^);
Another semi-related question: Do you know anything regarding the CD-ROM version for San Guo Zhi 2? Is there any significant difference compared to the disk version? (^_^);
... Certainly, if you would like to have a copy of the original version of the game, you're welcome to send me an e-mail about it and I'll send it to you. We own the IP; I don't have a problem sharing that version "for old time's sake," but through the website we only wish to distribute the newest, most recent version. Quoted directly from our archived news page (originally announced on February 24, 2009): After several patient years of research, communication and negotiation, we are very pleased to announce the acquisition of full legal rights to and ownership of half of Panda Entertainment's video game properties! As a result, we are now solely in control of all present and future developments concerning the following video games: Crazy Dodgeball, Sango Fighter, Sango Fighter 2 and Tough Guy. At the fighter selection screen in battle mode, type in "cutlet" to play as the soldier. His special attacks are listed on this page: http://www.sangofighter.com/soldier.htm I know everything about it. There are a number of differences between the floppy disk and CD-ROM versions of Sango Fighter 2. While I won't go into detail about them yet (I'll save that for the Sango Fighter 2 history document), suffice it to say that when we began work on our new and improved version of the game, we started with the most recent version of the floppy disk version's source code, and adapted the best features of the CD-ROM version into that code. Our final product will be a quality build of the best, strongest features of both versions, along with some additional bug fixes, speed improvements, and et cetera, that have never before been seen. We prepared a special demonstration version of Sango Fighter 2 for the 2010 Retro-gaming Connexion event in Crégy-Lès-Meaux, France, which I personally discussed and demonstrated for the attendees. While I can't project a release date for it yet, the work is nearing completion. To be kept informed, I recommend you visit the official Sango Fighter 2 website and sign up for our mailing list (if you haven't done so already). Thanks.
... Two videos featuring our new and improved version of Sango Fighter are now up on YouTube - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UUmOzePYCDY (review) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xsh5fp9iy4w (hidden character: Cao Cao's soldier) For a full list of changes and updates we made to the game, please check this page - http://www.sangofighter.com/history.htm To play as the hidden character (Cao Cao's soldier), select the "battle mode" and type in the word "cutlet" at the character selection screen. The soldier's special attacks are listed on this page - http://www.sangofighter.com/soldier.htm And of course, the game itself is available as a free download from this page - http://www.sangofighter.com/download.htm Thanks again for your interest and support. Have a nice day.
IMHO the biggest improvement in the update is the removal of the sound clipping. The rest of the bug fixes most people won't notice unless your a die-hard fan. @Mr. Sound-About: Do you perhaps know more about the unauthorised English port from Accend? Was it a hacked release, or was it created via the original source code? Or was it simply just sold as-is in pirated form? I'm guessing if it was from the original source, it was some how obtained illegally or through some kind of trickery?
... Yes, that clipping was a terrible oversight on the part of programmer Jon Cheng, who thankfully realized his mistake and corrected it in all future games he developed for Panda. I did the touch-ups to the digital audio files myself, utilizing my "keen ears" to maximum effect. I can only assume that it was Panda themselves who were working on the English language version. Why? Because of one sole piece of "evidence" -- the English title graphic that reads "Sango Fighter," which appears in the English version released by Accend, is the same one used in the Super A'can version of the game, which was created entirely by Panda. This perhaps proves that Panda produced all English graphics themselves, and were updating the source code to handle them, when the game somehow made its way into the hands of an Accend "employee." However this is purely speculation (which I'm not a big fan of), as Jon Cheng didn't tell me how Accend got hold of the game, nor in what state it was in when they did get it. I know this much: I recognize some "signature" programming that's consistent with Accend's other releases - so someone at that company definitely did some reprogramming of the source or straight hacking to the compiled EXE, in order to add / change some things. Beyond that, I don't know anything except for what Cheng told me: that Accend distributed the game in the USA without authorization from Panda, and that they somehow used the game as bait to swindle Apogee out of their 3D game engine. I have been thus far unable to reach anyone affiliated with Accend for comment. Not that I expect they'd want to step up and announce themselves as thieves, anyway...
I'm somewhat unfamiliar with the latter issue of the 3D engine. Did Accend licence or promise to use it for something, then fail to come through? I'm not even sure what the 3D engine was for.
3D Realms sent them an early version of their Build Engine, but apparently no one ever signed a contract for a commercial product. Accend made one game with the engine (released prior to Duke Nukem and thus AFAIK the first commercial Build Engine game). There's an English demo of the game called Rock 'n Shaolin: Legend of the Seven Paladins.
Well, the latest posting isn't that new anymore, but although it's been a while, there's always something in the making. Btw. have you seen our China/Taiwan thread over at HG101? We're currently speculating a bit about another old Panda game (水滸傳梁山英雄), maybe you can enlighten us. http://hg101.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=games&action=display&thread=7000
What are the questions? Here is a list of all the panda games (AFAIK / have): (1993) 三國志:武將爭霸 (1994) 爆笑躲避球 (1994) 西遊記 (1995) 三國志:武將爭霸2 (1995) 天才寶寶大進擊 (1995) 格鬥悍將 (1995) 爆笑保齡球 (1995) 非洲探險 (1996) 排球原人(修正版) (1996) 熊貓大進擊 (1996) 西楚霸王:項羽 (亂碼修正版) (1996) 非洲探險2 (1997) 水滸傳之梁山英雄 Superfighter team only has rights to a small portion of that catalogue unfortunately.
We're speculating whether or not 水滸傳梁山英雄 started out as a planned Super A'Can game, because of the oddly framed screen and the joypad icons at the top of the screen... Btw., can it be that the 1997 copyright is from a re-release of the game? The Korean version says copyright 1996 (although it was released in late 1997, too). Was the owner reluctant to give up the rest, were they too expensive, or are they owned by a different party altogether?
Hrm... Sorry, you'd have to ask the programmers / Panda if it was to be an A'Can game or not. Though Panda games use lots of interesting graphics and icons. I wouldn't be surprised if it was just a coincidence. As for Superfighter Team, I would assume it would be too expensive to acquire the full catalogue. But you'd have to ask to find out for sure.
... To my knowledge, none of Panda's games "started out" with the A'can in mind. They were a smarter company than that. The company produced PC games, and decided to quickly and shoddily adapt at least two of them over to the A'can. None of our business partners in Taiwan have much of anything to say about the A'can, so I couldn't tell you much more. Most of the people I've asked either find it to be an irritating or pointless subject to discuss, and many details have long since been forgotten (with good reason; the system was a complete and utter failure, and a huge embarrassment to all parties involved). Couldn't tell you; I've never even played that particular game. But if it has a 1996 copyright date on it, I'll tell you right now Panda likely never had serious plans to produce it for the A'can. That system was already standing in the dumpster by then. None of the above. We simply weren't concerned with acquiring their entire back catalog, at the time.
... A video review of Sango Fighter was published recently by the website "Ancient DOS Games." The video, which covers the game, its characters, special attacks, gameplay modes and more in great detail, is a great starting point for anyone interested in downloading the game, or who just wants a better understanding of it. Sango Fighter video review Of course, the full game is still available as a free download directly from the official website -- Download Sango Fighter for free Thanks!
