New system update. Downloading the update right now (I love how the blue light comes on if there is a update). Seems like some sort of Poll system.

Edit: Man, what a waste (Granted, it just launched). You have to do the system update, then download it for 130 blocks. At first, I thought it was something to do with, I don't know, gaming. Instead, the current questions are trivial stuff (Such as valentines day and what century you prefer to live in). Granted, you can suggest questions, so that may be something.

None of the damn current generation consoles seem to be focusing on games.

People don't want games -- they want extreme multimedia functions.

(This implies that you can't have both together like "graphics vs. gameplay" but of course I'm just putzing around.)

If you are in the US, run a system update, then go to the Wii Store and download it from the Wii Ware section.

The Wii is a console designed with casual gamers in mind, what did you expect? a OpenGL poll?

I don't know, maybe something that would help developers decide how they would...develop (Like asking what character you would want to see in SSBB or what feature you want in a certain game), or even casual stuff such as "Would you buy a game about Tingle being molested by a moblin", or something like that.

Never under estimate the power of statisticians and data miners to use opinion polls to prove just about anything, no matter how unrelated the goal is from the question. Though, they probably are just mining for stats that can be sold to marketers.

I downloaded the Japanese one today. We get dub crap like "Do you like Dogs or ???" bollocks ! I sure hope many people add some game questions. This service could be something really nice such as an online game quiz or something like that.

I was hoping it was gaming-oriented, so people can affect the contents of the games they ll be blowing cash on.

And no, i don't like dogs, they taste aweful when cooked.

    Bah,

Fanboys blast the ps3/360 for not focusing on games because that's all the wii does (since it lacks dvd movie playback) yet the wii keeps getting s*** like this along with a crappy web browser. Ugg....

This thing is just purely going to be used for marketing in the future.

I'm a little surprised that the Wii doesn't have DVD movie playback if they are going to do stuff like this as well. Might as well have it all to increase sales, imo.

I wouldn't say that, I think the Wii was designed with Nintendo fans in mind, with extra features put in for the casual gamers and / or families that want a few of the features that the other contender consoles had for less money.

I was just going to say that:nod:

The Wii was made with the sole purpose of going back to nintendo's roots: cheap-ass (production-costs wise) casual toys.

The Wii isnt made for fanboys, cuz what they want is a big penis-replacement console like what the N64 was at the time, so they can stick it to the PS3/X360 fans.

And is not cheaper either, not like the GC which at one point was almost half the cost of a PS2/Xbox. Right now you can get a X360 for just $50 more than a Wii, which is a repackaged GC at almost three times the original 2001 MSRP.

I really believe that the hype will wear out soon, specially since there's less than 5 must-have games in the works.

If you want to sell something with sub-par specs you've to make it really cheap...

repackaged GC or not, one can claim that both the XBOX and the PC shared same hardware.

Clearly though, the XBOX went down in history as a console and the PC is still the ever-changing PC. Just because a company cleverly uses existing inventory (per the believes of late Gunpei Yokoi, the father of the GameBoy - can't think who the mother was though) in order to get a second chance with a product that didnt quite work the first time around, although it had the potential, doesn't make this 'wrong' or a 'rip-off'. Arm 7 processors for example are used the world over for different and varied devices. I don't hear anyone saying "oh that's a GBA turned cell-phone, so the 800 dollar price tag is not justifiable'

My grudge against the wii doesn't spring from the engineering room at the nintendo RnD building. It's derivative of the lack of effort on the part of developers.

Nintendo , keeping things the same within the box, gave professionals a chance to use familiar tricks and traits that were seen as innovative and original the first time around with the GC. Giving more memory and almost twice the speed, one would expect the use of better assets and technology. Even gamers can defend the GameCube's first generation library against the Wii's technically when it comes to sound and graphics - just look at Factor5's Rogue Leader on launch.

Anyway, the voting channel might be a good thing in the long run, in communicating people's choice to the stubborn giant.

Nevertheless, I refuse to hear bad press about the console's price point and guts - just because two car share the same engine, doesn't mean that one isn't better and more expensive than the other.

Is not the same, we know there's some key differences, and the context is different: the problem with the Wii isnt that it has GC's guts, but that has guts from 5 years ago.

Is like if the Xbox was released with a PMMX 233 and a Voodoo1 card...

I dont really care about the obsolete internals, but the fact that it isnt priced accordingly to it.

Anyway, I agree with you about the developers: they must be trying to cash-in with the hype, much like nintendo is doing...

Going a little off topic, my main issue with the Wii so far is how developers are going to use the controller. Nintendo seems pretty dedicated to it, although most developers seem to treat it as a ticket to release last generation games on a current generation system (Such as Manhunt 2 going to the Wii and PS2).

It's somewhat sad that the last game built from the ground up for the Wii anytime soon will be Sonic and the Secret Rings. The rest are either ports of GCN titles (Super Paper Mario), ports from several months/years back (PoP: Rival Swords and so on), ports that come out on other consoles (Most 3rd party games), or not much upgraded ports of DS games (Cooking Mama). Well...at least in the US and UK...

I wonder if Mario Galaxy is 100%-Wii or the Mario128 that didnt come out in the GC.

BTW, isnt FarCry a Wii title from the ground up? or just a port/rehash of the GC one?

I ll hate them if they make mario galaxy a space-only experience, like the monotonous mario sunshine. I also want some solid platforming, like that found in the bonus levels of mario sunshine, combined with the level structuring of mario64. is this too much to ask for? :(
