As the title says it. Is the new Zelda game for the 3DS/2DS any good? It looks promising, but I want to know before I buy it. =hugh
If you're a big fan of ALTTP, the answer would be yes. However, if the modern 3D installments are your thing then it might not be to your liking. On an unrelated note, it's nice to see someone from Erie, PA on the board. I lived there for 1.5 years during 1990-1991.
You can find tons of reviews, videos etc, online from various articles to actual home videogamer's, not hard..........
Personally, I would ask here as well. Most members here are what I would call "true gamers." Knowing what they think about a game is more important to me than a review from someone who's gaming expertise includes Mario Kart, Super Smash Bros, Halo, GTA, and some other Mario title. Here you know you are getting an opinion from someone who has played more than 10 games in their life, & hopefully understands what constitutes a "decent" game.
Being an all around gamer and owning all consoles, I'd say, if you love LTTP and have a liking to old school gameplay with Nintendo Charm, then yes, it is a pretty awesome game and a must buy for 3DS. It's also the First Zelda game in a long time to do away with those tutorial type game elements (which bore me in Twilight Princess and Skyward Sword) and goes right into the real game. It was a lot better than I thought so it should please many people, including you, If you fancy old school type gameplay with modern visuals. Imo it's the best Zelda in such a long time and I never thought it would be this awesome on a 3DS
It's pretty fun, especially if you're a fan of LttP; I'd recommend it. I've already beaten it once, so here are my impressions. Oh, and... FUCKING SPOILERS BELOW (since either ASSEMbler doesn't have spoiler tags or I don't know how they work here) -Link's gameplay style is basically a much smoother version of his LttP gameplay, and it honestly feels great. I thought I'd hate the meter for item use, but thinking about it, it beats the hell outta having to find bombs, arrows, magic et al. The merging mechanic is probably the real attraction here, so it's a good thing it was integrated quite cleverly. However, I did have some problems with the gameplay: First off, it felt pretty bullshit needing to get an item just to be able to have two items equipped. In addition, having a faster movement and early access to warping make a certain item pretty useless as well (more on that later). I might get shit for this, but I think the "instant" item changing system is far too impractical and I found it more convenient to just go the old-fashioned way to equip items. -This is mostly nitpicking, but I was kinda annoyed with how some parts of the game lost some touches from LttP which resulted in a loss of charm in some aspects, like the Skull Woods no longer using the Dark/Lorule Death Mountain music. Also, I kinda miss this sound (loud warning) for transitioning between the two worlds. However, I did find it cool that one Lorule dungeon (the Desert Palace) actually took place almost entirely in Hyrule. -The free-reign dungeon order was kinda neat, but I think it brought some of the game's worst attributes out. Most of the items' mandatory utility in the game are confined to one or two dungeons max, with the most useless item probably being the Pegasus Boots. Link moves at such an unfrustrating pace compared in LttP (combined with getting the warp system very early on), I almost never used the things. Also, the need to only use one or two items per dungeon meant that the dungeons felt incredibly short (it's better than them being as long as LttP's Ice Palace and Ganon's Tower, but still...), and were overall a breeze for me. There was only one time I needed a guide, and it's because of a very obtuse detail in the Dark Palace: there's a room on the first floor where you need to bomb some breakable floor for light to shine down to give access to the Boss Door a floor below, but it's kinda inconspicuous. -The plot wasn't as copy-pasta as I was expecting it to have been, despite the amount of parallelism to LttP. I was genuinely surprised by Hilda being a secondary antagonist and Ravio being the Lorule Link (guess that's the closest we'll get to Link talking), as well as Ganon not being his own character. -Although... This one deserves its own bullet point: where's the relationship to Majora's Mask Eiji Aonuma was talking about, beyond the titular mask being in Link's house? The only things I could think of are that the place shown in the illustration during the explanation of Lorule's destruction of their Triforce looks vaguely like the outer walls of Clock Town and that Lorule's Triforce is drawn upside down like it is on the blocks in Stone Tower from Majora's Mask (and even then this all is tenuous at best). Otherwise I either missed something or Aonuma is just wrong. -The music in this game is goddamn excellent, especially the unique dungeon tracks used in Lorule and the Desert Palace. -There was no hint system nor overblown tutorial segment, which is pretty fucking metal. Overall, I enjoyed my time with this game, but IMO the main game felt a bit too short, and there are some areas where it just could've overall been improved. I'd give this game like an 85%.
Is it worth getting a 3DS XL for? If I go for it I want the best experience possible. Keeping in mind I haven't felt the slightest need to upgrade since I got my DSL so this would probably the only game I'd buy...?
I've just started playing it last night. I've completed the first dungeon and am enjoying it so far. If I hadn't already had a 3DS XL, I would have bought one for this game.
I bought a 3DS XL because of Zelda but also because I was interested in other games, mainly Super Mario 3d Land. But Star Fox, Mario Kart, and others I'll play eventually. It was worth it because I'm a big fan of classic Zelda. I like OoT and the similar ones are ok, but this game definitely makes you think of original top down Zelda awesomeness. If you were worried the new Zelda game might not be that great, don't be. If you like top down Zelda, you'll like it.
I really liked Link to the Past, I thought it was the best Zelda…Well almost, I do like OoT. I liked the retro dungeons in For Swords (DS Version). The only Zelda that I didn't like Zero Hour, I was having a hard time playing. It thought it was too hard so I gave up on it,, I know to most of you it probably thought it was easy, not me. As for the spoilers are concerned they don't bother me, it just gives me a more reason to buy it or skip it, I think I will get it because of the good reviews here. I would trust the reviews here then anywhere else, at least I'm getting the honest opinion here. I'm getting the 3DS XL for this. One last question, hows the 3D for it being a top down game? BLUamnEsiac: At least you left, I left Erie for 1 year to live in Cleveland and loved it. But sadly I had to move back into this sorry place. LOL =hugh
You mean the actual 3D visual effect I assume? I turned the 3D off on my system. I did experience it at a demo on a regular 3DS when it launched. It was interesting but like many people I'd rather just have it off. Those 2 games are awesome games though.
Well I got it to do the 3D games, I've been disappointed in some of the games when it comes to 3D. But then again I don't have very many games, I've been buying third party games of the eStore. :/ =hugh
Just got through beating this game. Its amazing and an essential Zelda game I think. Right up there with Ocarina. I think its going to be hard to play 2D Zelda games again without wanting to use that wall mechanic. Its brilliant.
I'll have to second that. I haven't finished it yet, but it's really good so far. I liked OoT but I never played Wind Waker and Twilight Princess lost my interest. Going back to the top-down style makes it alot more appealing.
This is the first Zelda I bought and haven't actually touched yet. The plan was to finish Fire Emblem before I get into Zelda D) but after reading this thread I just might have to try it real soon
