Now please be kind I'm old school. OK I want to mod my original Xbox. I have never done anything like this before. Now from what I read I have to get xbins on my computer. I have downloaded MIRC and typed in #xbins and all that but when I do it says cannot connect to xbins(invite only). I just need some help to actually do this. Honestly what I wanna do is play some old school arcade game emulators on my Xbox so if there is some other way please enlighten me. Thanks so much I know you guys are experts doing it for years but you gotta start somewhere right?
There's tons of guides online to get you started, as well as several methods, some being more "newbie-friendly" than others. https://www.google.ca/search?q=how+to+mod+original+xbox http://www.instructables.com/id/The-Easiest-Way-To-Soft-Mod-An-Original-XBOX/ http://www.se7ensins.com/forums/threads/new-easy-way-to-softmod-usb-noob-friendly.1090166/?jdfwkey=0hnz31 http://www.instructables.com/id/How-to-softmod-your-xbox...for-FREE/step6/The-Art-of-HotSwapping/
Thank you I guess what I'm really asking is xbins still "open"? It simply will not let me get in. It says invite only then does nothing. One more quick question would hard Modding do what I want to do? If I install a chip can I get the emulators I want then just bypassing the whole xbins thing?
I recommend that you use this mod http://www.instructables.com/id/Original-XBox-Controller-Memory-Card-Slot-USB-Conv/ if you don't want to buy a transfer cable.
No idea about xbins, but honestly, you can get everything you need elsewhere. I don't really know why people still use IRC fileservers, but they do. It always felt inefficient to me. Anyway, if you're confident with soldering (you don't have to be an expert) and have a compatible Xbox model (<=v1.5), the recommended mod is a TSOP flash, which is pretty straight-forward. Softmods are okay but it's probably best to try to avoid them if you have a better solution. Modchips are only really necessary if you want extra features that the TSOP won't give you, or if you're using a 1.6 (or 1.6b) model. If you just want to play arcade games, the TSOP method is fine. You'll need to check which model of Xbox you have first (plenty of guides around), then you can decide on one of those three methods. From there, you can choose to do other mods such as upgrading the hard drive or (if you're quite comfortable with soldering, since it's a lot trickier than the TSOP soldering) you can add RAM to the Xbox, which some arcade games need to play properly (of course, it depends on which games you want to play).
Xbins isn't private. Being new to irc or not following directions it's easy to botch. The hardmod route would actually necessitate xbins if just cuz they have BIOS files that you won't find elsewhere for legal reasons, and need in order to flash a chip. But if all you want is emulators then do a softmod and use the how-to's and crap you can download from emu sites. Even so, a successful softmod begins with being clear on the concepts involved, so be prepared for a lot of reading, and probably a minimum of splicing wires. After mastering the basics you'll get addicted and start hardmodding, then casemodding, then spending the milk money on more boxes. Etc. Then one day your wife walks out.
For modding: Softmodding an Xbox is pretty straightforward so long as you have the right revision of either Splinter Cell, Mech Assault, or 007: Agent Under Fire. I personally used Splinter Cell because exploitable copies of it are very common (and it was 99¢). You will need to find a good solution to transfer the cracked save files. This is basically the hardest part. You could either: 1.) Buy an Xbox Memory Card and the Datel PC Adapter that came with it (note: expensive) 2.) Mod an Xbox controller to read a compatible Flash Drive (at that point you might as well hardmod) 3.) Hunt down a Female USB -> Male Xbox cable and use a compatible flash drive. I used an older-gen 256 MB Sandisk Flash Drive myself. Many have reported success by using a PSP and a small Memory Stick (a 32MB card is more than sufficient) Once the saves are on your Xbox HDD, follow the respective softmod guide for the game of your choice. Boot the game, load the file, make sure to do a backup and follow the procedure in the guide carefully. For xbins: Make sure you are using #xbins on EFNet. Type !list in the chatroom The PM will give you the FTP details: usually "distribution.xbins.org", port 21, username is 9 characters max (i.e. 'eviltaco6'), password is usually 'emulation'. You may be able to use Windows Explorer as your FTP client but it is generally slow, problematic, and greatly exceeded in capability by a wealth of free alternative FTP clients. It's best to get your all of your files at once. Keep in mind, if you download over 30 (iirc) files, you could be temp-banned for a few days. Using a crossover cable is probably the best way to transfer files as it is direct and uninhibited. Standard Ethernet does the job well too. If you are working exclusively off of wireless, you could either: a.) Use standard DHCP settings and a wireless bridge for your Xbox (though depending on how robust your router or the bridge itself is, you could experience slowdown or have it suddenly quit during transfer.. it takes some more patience) b.) Burn all the files you need to blank DVDs and then use the File Manager on your Xbox to transfer them to your HDD. UnleashX or XBMC are more than sufficient for doing this. Good luck and enjoy your Xbox.
