Maybe so, but when I think of games that really showed us analog control was the way to go I think not only of Mario 64 but also of NiGHTS.
Nights came out before the N64 everywhere but Japan, so for many it was their first analog control game, first good 3D game and would be the only real Saturn blockbuster besides pack-ins.
Sorry all but I never found why Mario 64 is really a gem like everybody says (and I tried it more than 3 times). On the other hand, Nights really gave me some good time. Everyone got his own taste.
Then you've never used an N64 pad for any serious length of time. They have maybe a few hundred hours of play in them before the dead zone on the thumbstick starts really fucking with you.
Yeah, I don't mean they break off, they just fuck up. I never had N64 as a kid but there was always someone stuck with the fucked up controller at friends houses on 007 and stuff. I.E you dont touch the controller and your guy is always moving forward slowly. YMMV but everybody I knew with an N64 had at least one controller with problems. I never did but I didn't put that much playtime into my N64, always other peoples, lol.
I always used my fucked-up controller on the n64 - tons of game hours logged there. I have 5 other "virgins" though sitting in their original box: Clear Atomic Purple (proud!), Red, Black (sexy), another standard and Blue! mind you, all but my fucked up controller are made in china, whereas the former is made in japan
