Hey guys, was in Japan recently and managed to pick up a 3DS (funny story there too). Took a bunch of pics and finally managed to put together a gallery! Check out my Nintendo 3DS photo gallery (cross-eye 3D images). It gives a pretty good idea of what the 3DS is capable of and useful for camera-wise. Also, if you're interested in the software I used to generate the images, check out cr3ds. It'll separate the 3DS MPO into left, right, and cross-eye 3D images. P.S. we're gonna need a 3DS icon soon
Cool. Hey... maybe they should have just oriented the 2 screens horizontally so you could just cross your eyes to see the 3D effect! Would have saved a lot of money.
wow, the camera on the 3Ds sems to be worse quality than the one on my iPhone 3Gs. You would have thought theywould have included something better.
The pics look pretty good on the device. Nothing spectacular, but the computer screen exaggerates the low quality.
Bear in mind that there's two of them, that the photos are intended for use on a tiny screen, and that the 3DS costs a lot less than an iPhone. Given all that I think the image quality is actually pretty good. Really, if you want to take decent photos, use a digital camera - no phone or handheld game device is going to change that any time soon.
Hell I think even worse in many cases. I used it for a few seconds and though it was a joke. (Sorry to crap on you thread mikeryan but I do own a 3DS as well) That's a load of crap. Excuse after excuse after excuse for what simply is a cheap POS camera unit. (just a future note but NGP is crap as well).
Not at all, the intention of this thread is to give people an idea what it's capable of, bad and good. I was somewhat less than impressed myself. My take away is: Fun for taking pics of food. People make decent subjects too. Most things it's not worth it. FWIW people have even done amazing things with the Game Boy Camera, which is by all accounts a much worse camera: http://www.tapir.org/gbc/
speaking of 3DS. What you pick up with it? So far i've only got Ridge Racer 3D. Want a few more but waiting for prices to drop (also want Gundam 3D Battle that is showing up online but eek $67-$70 is asking too much atm).
Ridge Racer and Street Fighter. It's much nicer buying them in a store in Japan since you can walk up, see all the titles, see all the DS titles. Guess I'm just a brick & mortar kinda guy. Was a little difficult speaking almost no Japanese, but that was a little adventure in and of itself.
Obviously, there should be two expensive cameras on there instead. Like that'd make sense for a mass-market handheld gaming device. You'd piss and moan about the inevitable price increase anyway.
They don't look that bad. Obviously they're pretty low resolution, that's the main issue. The image quality isn't horrible, though. I don't think anyone is buying a 3DS just for the camera, anyway.
Heh I would love to but can't. I was originally going to get a 3DS this summer when I might get the chance to go but well right now the exchange rate was in my favor and might reverse come summer (right now Canadian Dollar is worth more then US Dollar when usually it's the reverse). =) Yes Totally, I was totally saying they should throw in like 3 16MP camera yo. Like seriously. :banghead: The cameras in this are piss cheap (like nintendo). It wouldn't kill them to at least get a 1mp camera. Also i'm not one to bitch on price since I bought an import for far more then a USA unit.
Expecting high quality cameras in the 3DS is like expecting a prime steak at McDonalds. If you have unreasonable expectations then you'll be disappointed, but blaming Nintendo in that situation seems weird to me. I mean, I agree, the quality is pretty shoddy. It's a gaming device first and foremost, though, and the camera quality reflects that - if you want to take pictures then you've come to the wrong place.
Yes that is all fine and dandy but never should be used as an excuse to make it sound better. They are shit plain and simple. No "but that makes it ok since blah blah blah". They are shit VGA cams that take really bad pictures. Just simply because they are in a gaming device doesn't really give them a pass either, This is a $250 device, not a $100 toy. You won't find me sucking up to sony either on the NGP cams as well.
Because deep down in side I always wish nintendo would take a page from sony and not be so damn cheap. :crying: Really I guess it's just being grumpy over all the years. I loved working on nintendo hw but they are so overly cheap and I'm tired of people making excuses that it's ok they're cheap for no good reason.
Sony gaming hardware is notorious for being cheap and crappy, you know this as well as I do. You've posted in this thread saying that the next PSP's camera is shit too. Why are we having this debate? It's pretty obvious why the camera is shit - because it's utterly peripheral to the function of the device. Who cares.
With out talking too much, it is but for a reason (refresh speed). The rest of the hw isn't cheap at all.
In so far as the complaining about the 3DS's camera: Who gives a fuck? Seriously, its a videogame console. If you want a nice camera then buy a nice camera. I took maybe 3 pictures on my DSi and... they're still on my DSi. I imagine I will take a few pictures on the 3DS and then go back to using it the way I'm supposed to: As a gaming handheld. Hell, I think its neat mikeryan was even able to put those pictures up.
