Nintendo 64 Transfer Pak

Discussion in 'Rare and Obscure Gaming' started by Greatsaintlouis, Apr 21, 2004.

  1. Picked one of these up today for a carzy $.99 and I'm trying to figure out what it is for. In case anyone didn't know, it's the deal that plugs into the controller and lets you plug Gameboy games into it. I recall it being for some version of some Pokemon game, but were there other uses for it as well? I find it a bit interesting that when the Gameboy Camera is inserted into the pack, it can point at the player - was this used for anything?

It was bundled with pokemon stadium.

You could use it to transfer pokemon from the blue, red and yellow pokemon gameboy games to your n64 to play with them in battle in 3D on the n64.

Yes the gameboy camera can be used with the transfer pack as well but the only game to take advantage of it is Talent studio for the N64DD.

It allowed you to use the gameboy camera to captre your face and paste it onto your 3d model. You will need a japanese gameboy camera though as it dosent seem to recognise american or uk models.

  4. There was gonna be transferpak/camera compatibility in Perfect Dark. So in multiplayer, you could take a piccie of your face, and put it on your character. I've seen pics, and i'm sure this was shown working at a game show.

But Rare/Nintendo thought that this was a bit violent, and removed the option from the final version of PD. Gutted...

  5. Yeah, I heard of the Perfect Dark thing - any rumors about whether the feature is still in the game (just disabled) or axed completely? It could have been fun...

So pretty much my options are Pokemon and 64DD software - not very encouraging, but then again it was only 99 cents, so...

Any linking between Gameboy games for unlockable features ala Metroids Prime and Fusion? What about Perfect Dark GBC -> Perfect Dark N64?

I recall some research being done into this... there's still several strings of text relating to this feature on the PD rom... but AFAIK the code itself is gone :smt022

If you plug Perfect Dark for the GB into it and have the N64 one running I believe it unlocks some cheat codes.....but don't quote me on that (I haven't played my Perfect Dark for a long time ^_^ Excellent game though :) )

You still can use it for Perfect Dark.

    http://gamefaqs.com/console/n64/code/25092.html

Not sure if it's used for anything else though. I heard that one of the reason that Rare took out the photo thing was after Columbine they didn't want ppl scanning yearbook or magazine photos and using them for target practice. Stupid I know but that's how companies act when they're in panic mode after events like that.

There was Perfect Dark, Pokemon Stadium 1 and 2 used the transfer pack. I believe that's all.

Oh yeh. Speaking of the perfect dark face mapping. Well you could do that to Goldeneye 64 but in a different way.

    YOu need the following:
    -N64 Gameshark
    -Parrallel cable
    -Goldeney game
-Face Mapper program that you can get here: http://www.rarewitchproject.com/
but the website is down. However, I downloaded the program, i just have to look for it.

    The COOL thing to do...

... is to write a GBA Emu for the N64 that can read the rom straight off of the GBA cart. Now that would be neat.

There is a Tristar that you plug into the regular cartridge slot and plays NES, SNES, GB, and N64 games. Its like $99 and it is not an official Nintendo product.

There were quite a few more games that use the gb transfer pak but i didnt have time to list them all in my earlier post.

Mario tennis :- You can unlock extra characters and courts by linking to the gb version

Mario golf:- You can unlock extra charaters on this one by linking and maybe extra courses but im not too sure on this.

Puyo puyon party :- If you link to the gameboy version of puyo puyo sun you can view a card gallery.

Roboponkottsu 64 :- Pretty similar to the pokemon games, you can transfer robots from the gb games to the N64 version.

Hey madhatter256, Please find that software ^_^ Though knowing my luck it won't work with a PAL copy of Goldeneye :/

  16. Thanks for the info everyone.

So it seems like this isn't a TOTALLY useless peripherial, but I sure would have liked to see it get more play, I especially like the idea of using the GB camera for mapping faces, etc. (Say, wasn't this a feature that Sony was touting as all super-new and such with the PS2??) It really bums me that the Perfect Dark face-mapping idea was taken out, as that could have been fun in multiplayer, but once again the gaming industry showed no spine and caved to the possibility that somewhere maybe someone just might actually do what they're afraid of.... kindof like PA, but thankfully this wasn't cancelled...

And Madhatter, I really hope you can find that program, it sounds really interesting.

  19. Re: The COOL thing to do...

The Tristar 64 actually has pirate versions of the SNES and Famicom hardware, though, rather than using emulation. It sort of sucks anyway, it has really shitty compatibility with SNES games, essentially doesn't work with most of Nintendo's first party games, making it pretty useless. It doesn't play Gameboy games, either; for that you'd need the Game Booster thing that someone else mentioned. The Game Booster actually uses software emulation, though, and the program on the cartridge has been dumped and cracked, so that people with backup devices can use it as a plain emulator, it's not very huigh quality, though, no sound and no GBColor support are the most notable problems.

Speaking of emulators on the N64, though, there's a really killer one called NEON64 that emulates the NES pretty flawlessly (though it doesn't have really extensive mapper support). It's one of the tightest and most elegant emulators I've ever seen as far as the code goes.

It Might Be NES is a NES emu for PSX. I have it and I think it has full mapper support, etc. The problem is, due to poor laser quality, sometimes the game will load or not.
