First time I've gotten one of these. It's a modem accessory from Nintendo. Looks like it's a stand-alone unit. The other modems have been attachments for the Famicom. The system itself is pretty cool, but check out the accessories. There's a Nintendo branded RF switch with an odd looking end. The Nintendo branded phone splitter is pretty cool, too.
Must be, I am guessing this is an all in one unit instead of the usual add-on based on the controller and plug ins.
Yeah, it's part of the Famicom Network System. You insert a data card into the slot. Unfortunately, I don't have a data card right now. I just thought it was cool as a stand-alone unit. Really hard to find these. I managed to get one with the original cables which is what I was really after....because that's how I roll.
Never heard of this unit before, looks nice! So it only uses those data cards as media? I wonder how they look, never seen one either. Congrats on this great find! And thanks for sharing it !
Very cool, thanks for sharing. Is there any hint on the box / machine about the manufacturing date? I've seen the controller before, but I didn't know where it belonged to. Another mystery solved :cur_sonic:
It's hard to imagine people using a video game system to do banking and stock trading, I suppose this partially what contributed to famicoms success. In America they were actually toying with being able to play the lottery on your nes, but that never got off the ground after they realized kids could easily play it themselves.
Ah, you're right, my bad. >_< @Assembler I suppose you could connect it to the Famicom modem though, which has to be inserted into the Cart slot.
I've seen the machine before, but I never found out much about the Data Cards and what games were actually released on the format.
Here's the old model of the same network system, with a (small) pic of the card that goes in it: I have the old version of the one above. It was pretty useless even with a card, but without one it's simply a paperweight.
I did a little research and it seems it was manufactured in 1989. But Eric can double check with the box/console if this is correct. Anyone knows what other software was released for this system? That Super Mario Club screen looks interesting...
The release date on the DataShip box surprisingly says 1990. The Famicom Network Systems that I've seen show a date of 1988. I guess this was released after the modem attachments for the Famicom. I don't have the access card but I have the box for it and it's for Daichi Kangyo bank. There's also a sticker saying that on the side of the box and on top of the machine. Something about "heart" (nani-nani) kun Mini. Below are pictures of the access cards that I've owned. I saw that Super Mario Club card on Yahoo a while back but the guy wanted 20,000 yen for it. I really wanted it but just couldn't spend that much money on it. I think they sold different versions of the white boxed modem. Some were just the modem, others were sold in packages with different access cards. Below is a picture of the JRA (horse racing) package that was sold. Under that are some of the other access cards that I've had. The last one is the box that comes with the Dataship.
