    Hey

Does anyone have any info on the Nintendo Famicom that has the square button controllers? It was supposed to be the first edition released, or something to that effect...

there's some pictures of it around here somewhere I think. The two boxy controllers stand bellow a sexy keyboard.

The ones next to the keyboard are from the Nintendo AES which was the precursor to the NES.

Yup you are correct, the very first batch of famicoms in japan had square A & B buttons. They are quite desirable amongst japanese famicom collectors.

Hehe i have even seen mint square button pads on their own for salse so famicom collectors can add them to their machine to turn it into a first edition.

So it's like the Famicom version of a "Type R" sticker. :D

I have a pair of the pads, it's very similar to the soft button Hudson expansion port controller (which is more responsive than my Nintendo pads) I don't think it's very good for shooters or pixel-accurate platformers but they are nice to look at (not mine, they're very scratched up ^^;)

BTW, there are many revisions of the original "1983" Famicom, at least one for every year until the AV FC, the controllers aren't the only thing that make the first edition although they are the most noticeable. Most collectors wouldn't be able to spot a Frankensteined console though (sometimes it's impossible to tell unless you can compare plastic.)

Any differences in the box? I have a square button unit and an extra box, but I dont want to mismatch when I sell it.

Is there any other way to tell if it's authentic? Serial numbers, dates, etc?

I don't have the box but I would presume it has square buttons pictured.
