Nintendo of America's Reggie Fils-Aime has said that he expects the Revolution to be the cheapest next-generation console available when it hits shop shelves next year.

"Value has been a key card for us this generation and we'll continue to play it," Fils-Aime told CNN Money.

"Do I expect us to be at a lower price point than our competition? Yes I do. Have we determined a price yet? No we haven't."

Nintendo has tried to woo consumers by undercutting its competitors before - the GameCube launched for USD 100 less than the PS2 and Xbox. But despite the cheaper price point, Nintendo's console failed to outsell its rivals.

"I think there were some lessons we learned with the GameCube that we need to apply to the Revolution," Fils-Aime said.

"First, we've got make sure that the titles in the first six months are strong and can drive sales. We've also got to make sure the console is attractive visually. And we've got to deliver on the right consumer needs."

"With GameCube, at the time, portability was thought to be a big factor - that's why it has a handle. Obviously, that wasn't the case."

Fils-Aime reaffirmed that Nintendo will not follow in Sony and Microsoft's footsteps and develop high definition games, which he claims would have "almost interminably long" loading times.

"What we'll offer in terms of gameplay and approachability will more than make up for the lack of HD," Fils-Aime said.

When it came to the question of possible price cuts for the GameCube, GBA and Nintendo DS, Fils-Aime simply stated: "Nothing's planned right now."

He did hint that a new version of the DS could be on the way, however: "As soon as [the DS] was launched, we started looking at ways to tweak it visually."

    Translation:

We didn't advertise much, and when we did, it was pure gash

We didn't pump out games less than 4 months apart, except for the "Game X featuring Mario" tripe.

We couldn't be arsed to do the online thing

I know everyone seems to love Reggie, but I can't stand the bloke.

Portability? Did the thing come with a screen that I haven't been able to find? Ridiculous.

Unplug AV, power, controller, pick up by handle. In fact if you have a wavebird you don't need to unplug any controllers.

With xbox you need to find a forklift first, and the PS2 isnt exactly the smallest, lightest system either.

And yes, there is a 3rd party screen and battery pack.

Yeah, there is a third party screen that was *everywhere* when the GC first launched. Snapped right on to the top of the unit. Pretty nifty actually. ;)

But Steadster has it more to the point. The idea was that you could easily grab the cube and bring it to a friend's house.

It wan't simply about practical portability, it was the fact that you could move it around generally with ease. It is like when you pick up a PS2, you don't know exactly where to hold it, with the GC it added a sense of comfort and ease to the machine, even if you never practically used it. It made the whole machine quite "approachable" and dare I say child friendly. Compare it with the Q and you instantly get a different sense to the console just when moving it around a room. It basically made it less like a VCR, I think the design of the GC is very good, it is just the colours of the damn things, you need a limited edition for any respectability in a gaming room.

Man...I love the cube. I purposely went for the purple one...and I've bought purple controllers exclusively. I guess I'm just weird like that.

I'm glad to see that they're working on fixing what when wrong...I'm even more pumped, though to see that they're changing the design of the DS. I consider it to be Nintendo's ugliest console ever. Bleck...I hate it.

Yeh because you would be the only kid in the neighborhood who would own one  . Everyone else would own either an xbox or PS2 and all you had to carry with you were the games.

With regards to the DS updates, There'll probably be a "DS SP" easter-summer next year, my crystal ball tells me. Not entirely certain what new features would be added, but probably will be sleaker, perhaps comfier buttons, possibly removeable faceplates a-la GB Micro

...perhaps also the same number of buttons as an N64/GCN controller...

Exceedingly unlikely, as it would break backward compatibility (i.e. you wouldn't be able to play "new" DS games on an original DS). Nintendo can be criticised for releasing many revisions of hardware, but at least a GBA game bought last week will work on every revision of the GBA hardware.

Also bear in mind that recently nintendo have been about simplicity - by breaking backwards compatibility they are shooting themselves in the foot in this regard, as it is effectively releasing a new system 18months after the original - imagine a PS3 came out in early 2002, and while it could play PS2 and 1 games, it also played new games. A heck of a lot of PS2 owners would be rather miffed at this...

It will probably be slimmer, feature the better backlit screens on the top and bottom, and come in cooler colors.

One thing they should and probably will bo make the distance between the 2 screens alot closer together. That would make 2d shooters doable on it.

I think nintendo knew they had no chance this past round and just decided to ride it out. They should be pushing rev and the DS online like crazy this time next year.

Given how much they're talking about the two systems working together, I sincerely hope that sometime in 2006 I can stroll down to the local EB and buy a Revolution/revised DS combo pack in sleek gloss white.

It'd be very nice to be able to download the "classic" Nintendo titles to the DS somehow for play on the go too....not sure why they wouldn't do that (still sorta thinking they will).

Nintendo should do a Sidekick style screen. Have one screen lay on top of the other, and if you play a GBA game, you don't need to expose the two screens, but if you play a DS screen, you just twist it and snap it into place having them one on top of the other properly.

Nintendo should quit blaming loading times for their shitty decisions.
