I'm probably never going to get a lap top so today I bought the Nintendo WiFi dongle for my Wii. Looks so easy to install but as always something just had to F*ck up. The software installs the dongle fine. My PC recognizes it and everything but here comes the problem. After the dongle installation the software then tries to set up something with the internet connection. No matter what I do it always says that it can't share the internet connection between the LAN card which the modem connects too and the WiFi connector dongle. What is going wrong? There's nothing at all about this in the instructions or on Nintendo's help page. I don't even run a fire wall ! Yakumo
you aren't doing anything wrong. Its the fuckups that the dongle is associated with. I had to put up with this crap myself. firstly, are you using SP1 or SP2 of windows? VERY EXTREMELY IMPORTANT: Go to your Network connections, right click on the properties of your LAN connection (or USB loader) and tell me what is listed: It should have: Client for Microsoft Windows File Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) Second, uninstall the Dongle (which you MUST do everytime installation FAILS, while the dongle is STILL connected) : Instert the CD and go to the depths of the folder structure, locating Devremove (something along those lines, you won't miss it), WHILE the dongle is plugged-in the USB port. Accept any bullcrap it tells u, and remove the dongle. Start over the installation.
I'm using SP1 because SP2 really messes up my FTP server. OK, I uninstalled the USB dongle. I now have two items under networks. The first is the LAN card and the second being the connection program (must dial the lan connection) both have the following QoS Packet Scheduler Client for Microsoft Windows File Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) First picture is the dial up program, second is the LAN card. If you can let me knwo how to get this up and running it would be a God send. I read on the net that there was a Hack for people having the same shared connection problem but all the links for the hack are down Yakumo
uninstall QOS Packet Scheduler. That was what fucked up my install as well.Remove it completely. From the SiS 900-based PCI fast Ethernet Adaptor first. and if it still doesnt work, remove it from the PPPoE too. Try again to install. PS: I read all the online forums, and no offence, but all the people were talking about computers and windows as if everything was dealt with black magic. Its simple logic really, and I found the solution to the problem by myself, on any number of computers. PS: Anti-virus software must be turned off. Zone Alarm (if installed) should be closed as no rules and settings will cut it right for the Wifi connector.
Yakumo, My advice get rid of the dongle and get a proper internet sharing solution = a router. Especially if your modem is ethernet it'll be worth your while. Sabre
I agree with Sabre, as I said in the other thread, but since he has the Wifi, he might as well set it up. I have a Wifi connector because i got one for free.
Well I m not an expert on USB DSL loaders but it seems that the Virtual LAN connection somehow is shared by the PPPoE , and you can't have a double-shared connection. (only one sharing per connection) To see if this is true, check if there is a hand-sign over any of the Network Connection connections. If it is, there's isnt f*ck all you can do about it
Yakumo, I think it is also down to not having service pack 2. I'm doing kind of the same with my Xbox360 at the moment. My PC is receiving the internet connection through my wireless PCI card. Then I share this connection with my Ethernet card on my motherboard. And it works perfectly well thanks to the service pack 2 which has better feature to handle connection sharing. Again I don't want to be a pain, but you'll get a much better results with a router because these devices are designed to do exactly what you wanna do. The Nintendo dongle looks very cluncky and relies on a layer of software that can go berserk easily. Plus you should really have SP2 installed, SP1 is full of holes... Which FTP server are you using BTW? What problems are you encountering with it FTP and SP2 together? Sabre
No one (here) has mentioned it yet, but if this is the adapter that your broadband modem is connected to, go into the Advanced tab here and make sure that the "Allow other network users to connect through this computer's Internet connection" is checked under the "Internet Connection Sharing".
mairsil, the WiFi installation software supposevely does that itself (I tried 'allowing' it manually, but it wouldn't work that way either). My issue with the dongle was resolved when i removed QoS. However, it seems that Yakumo's connection is dependant on the QoS, so I m sure he must hate me now or something:redface:
I'm in work now so I'll try mairsil's idea when I get home. The reason why I don't want or need a router is because I'll NEVER need to use it at all or at least not in the next few years. So the dongle was the best solution for now (cheap ) Barc0de, I had to start up a full new connection after deleting that QoS but managed to do it without QoS. I'll check for that hand thing but I can't say that I've ever noticed it before. I mentioned before that there is a hacked version of the software that will allow the dongle to share a connection if it's having the same problem that it's giving me. the thing is that all the links to this software are dead. Does anyone know of any Nintendo DS home brew sites that may have it? By the way, what do you guys think if I just delete my LAN card drivers and connection software then start again from scratch? maybe the original guy that installed it made a right pigs ear of it? As for Service pack 2, that made hosting an FTP impossible due to the stupid Fire wall it puts up. ServU FTP just couldn't be accessed due to the SP2 fire wall. Yakumo
Yakumo, firstly, SP2 firewall can be turned off entirely. Just choose to disable it on any network adaptor (real or virtual). secondly, I do have the instructions and alternative bufalo drivers, but its messy. I ll tell you why in the following lines: When i failed to install the proper way, I thought of installing the modified drivers (bufalo ones) + the ASUS utility, just as you thought. Nevertheless, it would NOT recognize the damn USB Dongle! the reason? QoS. EVen the alternative drivers DID NOT WORK UNTIL I REMOVED QoS! - QoS did not allow the device although hooked-up, to function properly. I have updated since to SP2 (i had sp1 until 2-3 months ago,i installed thru offline install) and everything works fine. Connection sharing is managed twice as efficiently and flexibly on SP2 than SP1. Finally, regarding costs: How much did u shell-out for the adaptor? In europe the adaptor costs 45 Euros. I can get a linksys for 55 euros or less. the only reason i stuck with the dongle instead of buying a router was that i got the dongle for absolutely free. What QoS does: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Traffic_shaping
Hmm, ok. What I'll do first then is install Service Pack 2 tonight then give the official program another try. If it works I'll then be seeking advice on how to switch off the fire wall because my Srevice pack 2 will be in Japanese which makes life hell becuase I can't understand half the bloody kanji they use. Yakumo
ok, best of luck with that. to turn off the SP2 FW, right click on the "two computers" indicating an ongoing connection in ur taskbar, choose the second setting from the bottom (change windows firewall settings), and you will be presented with a fairly visual display of what u r dealing with. In the second image you see the third tab of this window (not visible in the first screencap), where you choose which connections you want windows FW to dictate (by ticking)
Hi Mate, I've done a quick search on google and you can find scripts to execute on your machine to disable the firewall, Otherwise screenshots should do the trick to guide through the process. There's actually a page on the Microsoft explaining the process to disable it with ease http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=283673 Got your point on the router, no stress, it's just that they are so cheap nowadays that I advise all my friends to get one, makes networking easier to manage. I think SP2 will solve most of your problems, I guess the software for the dongle was built with the SP2 in mind. Though on the SP2 firewall you can open ports to let people connect to your ftp, while making sure the rest is secured. Last time I plugged my PC directly to the net I caught 2 worms and a trojan in less than ten minutes :noooo: Sabre
Thanks for that sabre470. that will come in handy ! Thansk for the info but I can't see that option. Can someone take a screen grab of the page mairsil means? This thing is really starting to piss me off now. I've installed SP2, reinstalled the Ethernet card and yet I still get the sharing error  Yakumo
yeap sabre, this is it. As i said before, enabling it through windows won't make a difference. I tried hard.
