From Neogaf's Dalthien ----------------------------- Just a quick software analysis: Wii/PS3/X360: 2,972,373 - Wii 3rd-parties 2.026.259 - PS3 3rd-parties 1,489,957 - X360 3rd-parties 9,623,641 (17 titles) - Nintendo 1st party Wii software 6,488,589 (211 titles) - 3rd parties combined (Wii + PS3 + X360) 8,209,229 (242 titles) - All non-Nintendo software (including Sony & Microsoft) (Wii + PS3 + X360) DS/PSP: (from the DS/PSP chart) 29,189,862 - DS 3rd-parties 12,932,966 - PSP 3rd-parties 53,750,181 (81 titles) - Nintendo 1st-party DS software 42,122,828 (553 titles) - 3rd-parties combined (DS + PSP) 44,991,267 (592 titles) - All non-Nintendo software (including Sony) (DS + PSP) If this doesn't illustrate Nintendo's absolute grasp on Japan, then I don't know what else to say. In the current gen home console market, Nintendo has 54.0% of all software sold even though they don't release titles on 2 of the 3 systems. Every other publisher combined (including Sony and Microsoft) accounts for 46.0%. And this is with only 17 titles released by Nintendo, and 242 titles released by everyone else. Yeah, that's right. 17 Nintendo games have outsold all 242 games released by everyone else. And things are pretty much the exact same in the handheld market. Nintendo has 54.4% of all software sold, whereas every other publisher combined (including Sony) accounts for 45.6%. And this is with only 81 titles released by Nintendo, and 592 titles released by everyone else. Again, 81 Nintendo games have outsold all 592 games released by everyone else. It is staggering - almost to the point of being unbelievable. Things should slowly improve for 3rd-party percentage on the handheld market with DQ9 and other efforts coming, along with Nintendo seeming to back off of DS development a bit. But it could get even more lopsided in the home console market in the short term with Wii Fit still going strong, plus Smash Bros. and Mario Kart coming soon. In any case, this is why I laugh whenever developers or publishers (or even fellow GAFfers) make comments suggesting that publishers should avoid Nintendo systems because they don't want to compete with Nintendo. The simple fact is - they already are competing with Nintendo, regardless of what system they put their titles on. And they are losing that competition - badly. I would suspect that almost everyone who owns a PSP also owns a DS in Japan, so whenever a PSP owner buys a Nintendo published DS game, that is money that could have gone towards a PSP game. The publisher was still competing with Nintendo for that money even though they made an effort to avoid the Nintendo platform. Likewise, even though the situation with the Wii/PS3 isn't quite as dramatic, I am sure that a significant percentage of PS3 owners also own a Wii in Japan, and that number will likely continue to grow over time. And I am sure that nearly all PS3 owners probably own a DS. This isn't to suggest that some games don't make sense on non-Nintendo platforms. But when Nintendo starts achieving the mass-market penetration that they have with the DS/WII, publishers have to realize that they can't avoid competing with Nintendo simply by avoiding Nintendo platforms. The numbers speak for themselves. It's just incredible. ------------------------------------------------------------- What a time to be a third party developer, huh?
a company can make good money on the Wii considering the much lower cost and effort of development. All third party games on Wii, so far, haven't even tried to technically push the machine. Actually, the only games I ve seen making a difference are Galaxy and Brawl, none other so far.
That seems to be the case. I wish there was more awesome games for Wii, I have 5 now and they seem to be the best it gets.
Yay, numbers without sources, What time frame are these numbers from, although it doesn't really make a huge difference it can help us look for spikes when one system might have sold lots of software. Also, Hmm, the last time I looked the PS2 was a major force in the Japanese gaming market. I mean if you are going on home console software sales for 2007 then games sold on the Sony machines (PS2 and PS3) outsells the Wii. The numbers without sources don't really tell us a lot, going on the sales for 2007 using VGCHARTZ (which although not fully accurate is not that far off from the Media Create numbers and given that neither Enterbrain or Media Works can get correct numbers either, we'll assume it is correctish) we can see that Nintendo sold over 27m pieces of software where as Capcom, Bandai, Konami and Sqaure sold about 4-5m pieces of software each). However taking the fact that about 70.1m pieces of software were sold and Nintendo sold 27.7m pieces that would only give 39.5% of sales which is 2 out of 5 rather then the 1 out of 2 that the report seems to give us. Nintendo have a dominace but things change, Nintendo dominated for many years in the eighties and early 90s before letting Sony sneak in. Cycles can change. You can also use 'facts' to give wrong views about the market, Wii Play for example is bundled with a controller and in a lot of places it isn't that much more expensive then the seperate controller so are we to assume that the 1.5m people that bought it, bought it for the game or the fact that they couldn't get a regular controller... Best selling portable game of 2007? Was it Mario Party DS, Brain Training, New Super Mario Bros, Pokemon Dungeon on the DS? Or was it Monster Hunter Portable 2 on the PSP by Capcom? One other thing is that Dragon Quest Sword and Oduro Made in Wario are selling quite well, although a number of large retailers have put both titles in the bargain bins and are selling the game well under the RRP. Although so far I have yet to see any PS3 games being sold for bargain bucket prices... Also Microsoft should admit defeat and leave Japan, number of games that have sold over 100,000 units in the life of the Xbox 360. 2 (if you add the Xbox it jumps to a whole 4!). Number of games to sell over 100,000 units in 2007, er 0. Number of PS3 game to sell over 100,000 units in 2007, 6. Number of Wii games... 21. Number of PS2 games... 27... hmm. So that's 33 on Sony machines. Result for Sony, etc... Currently the Wii does lack an online gaming service which is something that the PS3 and the XBox 360 can offer and is mainly aimed at the casal family market and it's winning that hands down, I know a few families that have the Wii and most only have Wii Sports and some even splashed out on Wii Fitness... Yes Nintendo are dominating but so what? Third parties got burnt once before bending over to Nintendos practices but as long as they can make money they will support a number of machines, eggs in one basket and all that...
Right now, I have Wii Sports, Zelda, Resident Evil 4, Mario Galaxy, and Metroid Prime 3. There are other games I would like to play of course but these are the ones that caught my eye and made me want the system (besides maybe Wii Sports). No More Heroes looks interesting, and the House of The Dead ports looks cool, so maybe I'll get those when they come out.
I was surprised myself on numbers. When I talked to a friend who is a local game store owner I asked why he had so many aftermarket N64 controllers he said he goes through the rack in a week. I did not believe it till he showed me the sales sheets. If any game company deserves credits its nintendo. resonable cost and reliable machine. I would suspect if game companies taylor to who has the most machines in the market we will see a bunch more titles coming for the Wii
Wario Ware is really silly... but I kinda like it. Since I don't have a Wii of my own, I've just played my sister's a little bit, I haven't bought any games for it. I haven't played the good games for the Wii but I'm so busy with my 360... If I had my own Wii, I'd be playing Galaxy and Paper Mario right now.
warioware is awesome. The minigames are quite good - marioparty should follow suit, since most of its minigames are retardedly simple. Sonic.. well, it didnt grasp me. The controls and the theme aren't really Sonic.
The main problem with Sonic are the retarded controls. If Sega had given the option to use the classic controller it could have been a pretty cool game. As it is though, it's just bloody annoying. Shame really because it looks very nice plus has loads of extras to unlock. As for Paper Mario I found that so bloody boring! More for the kids to be honest. I did finish it but sold it the very next day for only 1000 yen cheaper than it is to buy brand new. You've got to love the Japanese and their love for anything Mario. You're always guaranteed to get at least 80% of your cash back  Yakumo
I liked Paper Mario, but not as a Super Mario title - it's not one of those. It's a more action-focused sequel to the Paper Mario series, a light-hearted RPG, and for what it is supposed to be it performs just as expected. There's lots to be unlocked for the patient RPG/platformer fan, and it's a rare game in that it combines two seperate types of game into one. Whenever I say RPG i remind myself of Panzer Dragoon Saga! One of my favourite RPGs of all time =)
Oi, you Wii fanboys if you want to discuss games go back to the Games forum and discuss it there  ;-) , you should be discussing how much the numbers are wrong / right and how Nintendo are evil / godly and how much the third parties are in trouble / doing great as well as saying how brillantly / badly Sony are doing and why the author of the original report is an idiot / baka for excluding the PS2 and skewing the results far too much in Nintendos favour.
OK, if it's numbers you want how about this - err....... yeah, that's right:redface: (runs off) Yakumo
