I know this has been discussed before, but searching for the term "Wii" yields no results, and after about page 30 I gave up. So my apologies on that end. At any rate, this guy and I got into a debate over how hardcore Nintendo is screwing people over with the Wii. It was stated that the Wii is nothing but a Gamecube in a new shell and that Nintendo makes $100 per Wii sold. So I felt I would ask here, probably the best place on the net to ask, how valid this statement is. Does Nintendo make $100 or more in pure profit on each Wii system sold (including consideration of Wiimote, nunchuck, etc.)?
"nothing but a Gamecube in a new shell" Exaggeration much? I will agree that it IS derived from the GCN architecture -- but that quote is too far. In other words... GET THE HECK ON IT DEVELOPERS AND MAKE SOME GAMES THAT WILL PUT THIS ALL TO REST. (Don't worry, I understand it takes time... Tough shit to all the devs who thought Wii wouldn't take off though... You sorta can't blame them, but only if they're now creating admirable works for the Wii.) Anyhow, yeah, I do imagine the pretty penny is being made off Wii. I don't really know though... Anyone with some iSupply info?
I think in the UK the bill of parts vs price they are selling them to retailers earns them £80 profit. Can't remember where I read it, probably Joystiq, Gizmodo or Techdigest.
