Do any of the Japan residents have anything to say about reactions to the result? It's surely one of the most interesting shifts in the political scene in decades.

Indeed. The exact same thing will happen with different people pushing the buttons.

i'm already bored of hearing conspiracy theories as to how this is a grab of Japanese power by those filthy Koreans.

    smh @ japanese people.

and if one more tells me how the one party tore two Japanese flags up to make their banner one more time.... :/

From a purely selfish point of view, all i care about is that the Zairyo (or whatever the card was called) gets abolished and the whole "oh, now you have to go to Shinagawa along with the rest of the world for ANY honky business" idea also burns in a fire.

It has been quite weird to see people under the age of 98 at the front of the Japanese political scene! Usually "young" for politics here means that the politician is a spritely 75 or so.

As GaijinPunch said. Same old ideas with new old gits running the show, if they can remember what year they are living in. What pissed me off was that EVERY TV station had the shit on. I mean why?? Do we really need 5 stations broadcasting the same crap?

TV's in Japan only have one use and that's as a monitor. Rip out the tunner because you just don't need it.

I was in Japan during the build up to elections and from what I gathered from speaking to people there, the only reason the Democrats were expected to win was because of Obama-mania and the fact that the party basically said they were going to copy any policy Obama came up with in the US, which I suppose is as good a reason as any in Japan. Essentially, the election wasn't won because of the party's own merits, but because they aligned themselves with the party of another country which will have no say on the running of Japan.

Personally I find it a bit relieving to see that politics world wide is shifting slightly back towards the left nowadays. Not sure if anyone remembers how a decade ago several prominent countries worldwide elected pretty hardcore right wing governments (USA, France, Isreal, Russia, etc.) Look where that got us.

Well in the UK, it's like the Conservative Party will win the next general election, not sure if that will show any change as the Labour party shifted to the right anyway, if only the liberal democrats (a party made up of the merger of the Liberals (a party slightly less right wing then the conservative party) and the Social Democrat Party (a party ironically formed by ex labour party MPs who thought that labour were too left in the late 70s)) who have shifted more left wing then the labour party, could get their act together then they might win the next general election or at least hold the balance or power.

The lib dems are probably on for another record result I think, but I expect turnout to be dismal barring anything crazy happening between now and then. It's interesting reading everyone's thoughts about the election in Japan. I heard and read a lot on the BBC about how the hereditary passage of political seats was waning dramatically, also a decrease in the age of candidates as mentioned above.

He should be the next PM of Japan. Nothing like having an alien run the country.

Most European countries saw a partial shift to the right in their latest elections (particularly more marginal further right-wing groups). Although the existing governments were usually far more left-thinking than the US government, a lot of it is probably due to protest voting due to the current economic crisis and opposition to foreign policies. In France, Sakozy has had to align with right wing parties to strengthen his "centrist" coalition, Israel is currently as right wing (read "anti-Muslim") as it has ever been (even under Ariel Sharon) and Russia has always had authoritarian, if not necessary typcially "right wing" goverments since the fall of communism (after all, it's the same bunch of oligarchs running the place).
