Just updated my US PS3 to formware 1.6. In Europe this firmware enables software emulation of PS2 games. Does nothing of the sort (optional or otherwise) on a US system. PS1 and PS2 games play exactly as before. Would have been nice to have an option for using software emulation on games that support upscaling, maybe next firmware. All we essentially got was folding@home and background downloading.
I dare say they are trying to figure out how to deal with the pre-existing chips in the already sold PS3's instead of forcing it on consumers. That, or they are working out the kinks with US/Japanese emulation.
Probably the later since making an entirely separated emulation enviroment just to take care of a minor part (in the near future) of the consoles is a waste of money and resources...
The EE&GS chip is probably different in function to the stand alone GS chip in the new models. They'll probably have to rewrite the software emulator to make it work with the old system. I wonder what the chances of that happening are?
